Brake Hissing

My 1990 YJ started making a hissing noise. When I pressed the brake pedal it stopped. Hasn't effected anything yet...but today it started making a different hissing when I pressed the brake pedal.

Sort of tight hissing when not pressed and then spurting like hissing when pressed.

Dont' know if I'm explaining it well enough but does anyone know what this is.

The pressure on the brakes are fine...it stops without any trouble but I don't want to be surprised.

You will be surprised before much longer
Your brake booster is leaking - time to replace it

Just the booster no - but it has to be done a certain way
Best to either get experienced help or a manual to learn

Basically, you unbolt the master cylinder from the booster without removing the brake lines
Thenn disconnect the pedal from the rod under the dash
Then unbolt the booster

A manual will have good pictures

I did this on my 1990 yj a couple years ago. It's simple but hard...let me explain.

The mechanical side is pretty basic. Remove a few bolts, disconnect from break pedal and put new unit it.

The hard part was reconnecting the brake pedal, because there's a configuration of washers and a wire attachment connected to the brake lights that you have to put back in order. What makes this part hard, or maybe difficult is you have to spend a lot if time laying upside down under your dash trying to hold things together and slide a bolt through it.

If I could go back I would've taken a picture if the set up before I took it apart. That would eliminate trying a couple different ways to get the brake lights to light up.

Also don't forget to buy the gasket seal stuff for when you put the new cylinder back in.

It's not a complicated job just a lot of contorting. You can do it.

Be sure to check your vacume hose before you run out and buy a new booster.
The hose that runs between the booster and the manifold.
It could be cracked and leaking.

93 YJ SOA 2" springs front, XJ springs rear w/main leaf added, High pinon 9 inch rear detroit locker front Dana 44 ARB 4.56 Gears, 36 inch Irok tires too much to list.

Best way to get that brake washer setup is to
Tip jeep on its side
cut big hole into floor

No seriously it's not bad. Take a video. It will show more angles and you can post it for us to reference in the future

I would check that vacuum line first though.

I'm new

Removal of the driver's seat makes it a whole lot easier.
