Both tires spun!!!! Whoo-hoo!

Ok, I've posted on this before, but forgot about it. Today I "popped" the clutch a little while in some wet grass...the passenger rear tire left a 4 foot burn out mark...the driver side rear tire left a 2 foot burn out mark.

This means I have a limited slip diff correct? There are no tags/markings on the rear end so it's hard to tell if the PO messed with it or not...but from what I know if both tires spin (especially if one spins more as evidenced by the longer burn out mark on passenger side) then that indicates LS.

I know LS is not all that, but it'd make me feel a little better!

others can correct me if I am wrong, but I think if you want to know for sure you can always jack up the rear so both tires are off the ground. if you turn one wheel by hand and the other wheel turns in the same direction you have limited slip if the other wheel turns in the opposite direction it is an open diff.

All you have told me is that you can spin both tires in wet grass. I can do that with a civic.

Unless the previous owner put in a LS....i'm pretty sure that no YJ came with a LSD. On top of that.....if you are spinning your tires with that stock rear axle, your likely to break it.....just at that point when it gets traction.....POP!!! I've read many posts over the months about ppl doing exactly what you did, "just for fun" or "just that one time." You don't know how many posts are here about busting their stock Dana 35 rear axle because they were doing exactly what you were doing. Food for thought next time you act like Jeff Gordon, when you should be acting like Ivan stewart.

YJ's with a stock "Tow Package" came with a rear Posi, at least that's what the guy at the rearend shop told me when he rebuilt mine. (Of course that was before I came here and heard about the 8.8, oh well, just a wasted $1200.)

Nothing personal.....but I still don't believe it. I'd like to see some clear cut proof/paperwork/internet site that demonstrates that a YJ came with a posi.

Any open diff will do what you described. If you want to chech for limited slip put one wheel on pavement and one on loose dirt, ice, slick mud, or whatever and lay into the throttle. An open diff will spin the low traction tire like crazy. Limited slip should kick in and move you right along.

With both tires on grass, gravel, etc., the tires can act pretty much equally making some think they have limited slip. Open diff always keep the torque equal at both axle shafts.

i put an open 7.5" behind a 5.0 after i split a 8.8 in 1/2 and i used to spin both almost evrytime..when i had the 7.5 behind my 2.3T it would spin one all the time and never 2..i guess the sudden hit of the 5.0 got em loose

Yeah, Like I said that's what the guy at the shop told me. I personally have NO actuall knowledge of it. I don't know where someone could find an "options list" to see if they even offered a "tow package" or some different rearend LSD or Posi.

From what I understand you can contact Chrysler and give them your VIN number and they will send you the blueprint for your vehicle from when it was manufactured. It will show everthing that was installed on your Jeep at the factory. I can't confirm this but I read about it on the Jeeps Unlimited forum just the other night. Anyone else know about this?

Thank you...this was the type of info I was looking for, just wasn't too sure. Just to clear things up...I wasn't "bragging" that I could spin both tires in wet grass or saying that stock YJ's came with LS option (although that would be good to know). I was curious to see if that meant anything concerning MY particular rear end setup.

Thanks!

"Jeff Gordon"

Mine came with it from the factory. It had 85k miles on it when I bought it and even with the low mileage the clutches were worn enough that it didn't function at all.

Mine came stock with a limited slip. It has the factory tag right on the diff. Says to use special gear oil.
