On Board Air System

i want to get the OBA system on my jeep.. i went offroading the other day took air out of my tires and later got done wheeling and i had to drive a mile to a gas station to air the tires up.. with my 4cyl being pretty weak if i put the belt drivin compressor on, will it effect performance.. on and offroad? i have a serpantene belt i think.. i was think about buying a york compressor and i was wondering if it will mount to my engine with proper brackets and a new belt.

i was also thinking of making a tank out of my rear bumber.. later

When the compressor is on, it will pull power from your motor. But the compressor wont be on when you are wheeling or driving. So then you wont loose power. It is a very simple setup. Here is a great site for OBA.

Hope this helps.

addinbg a compressor won't hurt your engine output any since the clutch freewheels until you engage it. for the bracket i think you'll have to make one, i know kilby doesn't have one for my 2.5, but i have v-belts so yours could be different. turning the rear bumper into a tank has been done many times, and several manufacturers actually include that as a selling point.

my york is sitting on the bench waiting for me to get around to building the bracketry. finally found a double groove pulley that will work with my alternator so this will likely be my next mod. the stock compressor mounts on top of the alternator but if you're using a york you can pretty much put it anywhere you want since the brackets are custom anyway. i'm thinking i'll mount mine to the pass side of the alternator but that might change once i start taking measurements.

good luck. a lot of those things are in some tight spots to get two. took me 4 hours to pull minetry and make sure your clutch works before buying it. a new one will run you $100+ which kind of defeats the purpose of getting a JY comp.

I'm going to try the sanden 709, which I picked up for $20 and will bolt right in. Although, after this weekend, I think I'm going to grab a CO2 setup for a main airing system.

BTW, Nick, you dont happen to have those couple shots from Trail 25, do you?
Edit: NM, just saw them in the JF Run thread.

yeah, the clutch comes off easy enough, but a new one is pretty expensive. being you've got the v-belts already you won't need to change the clutch as long as it works where as someone whole uses a serpentine belt would. unless they used a combo pulley of course. lots of different options here.

I use the Sanden 709 compressor mounted in the stock location sice I do not have air. It will inflate a 35" tire as fast as CO2. I have taks mounted under the Jeep left of the transfer case. Also provides ARB Air.

Any images or details of your setup. It's next on the list at some point. The compressor's sitting in my "to-do" pile right now. I may be picking up a CO2 also, but I'd like to have this as a backup/misc system.

Any info is appreciated. Thanks...

Here you go.

Sangen Compressor in Stock Location

Inlet and Pump Oiler

Air Inlet

Air cleaner, Pop-off valve and switch

Air outlet

ARB Regulator in cab

ARB Locker Switch Location

Air Tanks drivers side of drive shaft.
Hope this helps, my total cost about 100 dollars but I got free tanks.
