blowing my fuse

Having a run of electrical problems on my YJ . Tail lights and parking lights quit working - is this the gold metal fuse that is about and inch square ? No instrument panel lights - fuse looks good but when I put circuit tester on either side of fuse contacts I don't get any current on either one - anybody with any idea where to look next ? Need to take it to PC Monday for Spring break but would really like to have tail lights - insrument panel lights I can do without if I have to( I can allways use a flash light . Thanks.

fuses are cheap.
try swapping another one in it's place.
if it works, you are good to go.

If you mean the tester ground , I checked other fuse connections and it beeped. If you mean another type or place for a ground , I just assumed the fuse panel was grounded . Thanks

Oh wow... dude, I was in the exact same boat as you but it took me like a week to figure all of it out!

We went through countless fuses and FINALLY figured out that up in the front where the front marker and signal lights go through, the wires were being pinched against the sheet metal and the insulation had been cut through so since somehow, the instrument panel lights, tail and signal lights are all linked together, it kept shorting out whenever the Jeep jiggled the "right" way... I also had to replace the relay though, aswell as patch up those shorts. Get a good Chiltons or Haynes manual and check out the schematics, they really help a lot in narrowing down the problem.

I had the same thing happen to me, but it kinda sucked beacause it ended in a DUI...... Anywho I searched through all the fuses and found nothing, then relays, then wiring.... come to find out its the switch itself. That thing was dirty as hell so i hit it with some WD40, shined it up and POW works like a champ

no power from the fuse block at fuse 8 (20 A fuse in the third row down) means you have a bad wire between the fusible link (it can't be the link itself or else you wouldn't have any head lights) and the fuse block. either it's broken or there's a bad connection at the block or where it splices in with the line to the main part of the headlight switch. if you have no power at fuse 8, then you won't get any at fuse 10 (5A fuse in the lower left corner for the gauges). if you have no power at fuse 10, but power at 8, then it's likely your headlight switch. so which fuse did you test?

Just went out and double checked I have power on the right side of fuse 8 and the fuse is not blown. As I understand your post my problem should then be my headlight switch . You don't know how much I apppreciate you taking the time to help with this. As I said earlier I plan on changing the switch tomorrow after that it would have been on to the dealership $$$$. I still do not have any power in fuse block 9 acc lps and all my lights in my dash have stopped working , the 4 guages plus the tack and speedometer any connection to the above problem ? Again , thanks a bunch.

since you lost both tail/park lights and the gauges the headlight switch is the likely suspect. anything else would have to be loose/bad wires. fuse 9 though doesn't power the gauges and is only hot when the key is on. if you're testing that then make sure the key is on. that's the 15A fuse to the right of the 20A you tested for the headlight switch. the one controlling the gauges is fuse 10, down in the lower left corner of the block. you won't get power there unless your tail lights are operating (the headlight switch feeds power to the dimmer wheel and then fuse 10 draws power off the wheel before going to the gauges) so don't expect to have gauge lights until you get the tail lights fixed. if you get your tail lights working and the gauges don't come back, check that fuse for power and if you get nothing, pull the wheel and check to make sure you have power coming in when the headlights are on. since they all went at the same time though, the headlight switch will likely solve the problem. keep us posted
