Any negatives from using a bigger (more capacity) oil filter in the 4.0?
I've heard that the Fram PH-8A fits.

I can't imagine unless there are clearance issues? In other words would a bigger filter fit in the space available? The only other thing I can think of would be if the bigger filter could make the oil pump work harder (too hard?) to pump the oil through the system with the bigger filter on, and that could cause problems (maybe loss of pressure)? I don't think it's likely, but it could be something to consider. I would think that the more filtering the better, but who knows? Any mechanical engineers in the house!?

I use the Motorcraft version of the PH8A or NAPA Gold no real advantage with the extra cap it really is not that much difference.

There is definately a benefit to using a higher capacity filter. The more filtering capacity the engine has, the less oil will bypass the filter. All engines bypass oil past the filter by design. Adding filtering capacity will limit the amount that is bypassed. As for filters, I strongly recommend a quality filter, not a Fram. Napa gold, k&n, pureone, or wix are some better filters on the market. Personally, I run wix in everything from tractors to brand new cars. The large filter number for a jeep, from Wix is 51515. Strongly recommended. As for fram, its not what it used to be years ago. The quality has fallen to a walmart level and the price reflects that. Spend the few dollars and buy a good filter.

Cant speak for different filter sizes I just run the stock size, but I wouldnt use use a fram at all! Go with a wix or bosh or napa high quality, oil filters are not something to go cheap on, your engine is at stake there

A larger oil filter will not harm anything in fact it will help. Just keep in mind, a larger filter will require more oil when u do an oil change. I don't remember the # but I run a purolator that is larger than required and I have almost 1/2 a QT extra @ oil changes to reach the full mark on the stick.

X2 ditto. I couldn't agree more with ya here. They went to using a plastic by-pass valve which doesn't hold hold up well during start up's. IMHO, they are junk now that they allow sh*tmart errr I mean walmart to run them.

I'm probably going to hear some crap for this, but I went the other way and use a smaller filter, so it only holds 5 qt. I dump in the 5 qt jug and I'm done. Before you start bashing let me say I change oil and filters religiously 2500-3000 miles. and check the level every fuel stop. what can I say, I'm a cheap bastard.

LoL. I'm not going to bash ya. I say to each there own my friend. Im no pro mechanic just an old grease monkey. I will just offer my advise to ya, that a bigger filter would be better IMO.
P.s. I'm told by both my wife & son that I'm just a cheap bastard!! LoL :-)
