Big diff. going from 3.07 to 3.54 gears?

I would like a little more of my power back...after going to 33's, my Interstate travelling has suffered because we have TONS of hills around here.

My '89 is running the stock 3.07 gearing. I would like 4.10's, but can't afford them. However, I think I can get my hands on a set of 3.54 axles out of another '89 very cheap (almost free).

Would I notice a difference with the 3.54's, or would it not be worth the hassle of changing the axles?

What are your thoughts, gents?

I would say you won't notice much. Hold out for at least 4.10s I'm running 4.56s and a tire a little over 32" and I love it.

Better than nothing. If you're doing the work yourself, then I say go for it. You can throw the 3.07's back under the other Jeep and re-sell it if needed. If you're paying someone else to do it, the cost-reward isn't high enough IMHO.

If you can change axles yourself it -might- (depending on a local deal you can dig up) be easy to get 4.10's for the front axle and then find a 8.8 with 4.10's in it already. So then you only have to re-gear 1 axle and will have removed the 'weak link' d35. But that depends on if you can find an 8.8 cheap or not. No matter what you do right now, I would highly suggest you don't bother re-gearing the d35 as it's investing into something not worth it. Another option might be to scour for a junked 4cyl YJ (with the 5 speed stick) those all came with 4.10's and would bolt up. I know your question was about something else but I figured I'd give some insight into the bigger issue. hth

Thanks to the price of gas here ($4.25 a gal) I just bought a mountain bike, 0" of lift, 0" of travel, MT's, locked rear axle, oh yeah, it's the sh#$.

CanukYJ, your idea sounds like a good plan. However, that requires MONEY.

I can probably get the 3.54-geared axles for FREE. All it would require is unbolting the entire rear-ends, swapping them, and putting it back together. This is something that can be done relatively easily, too.

I did find a set of 4.10-geared rear-ends from a 4-banger, but I don't have the cashola to pay for them.

You are talking about doing the front and rear both right? Heck if it is free what the heck. You probably will not get 5th gear back though.

Heh. Who said I don't have 5th gear? Hahaha I still use it on the flats and mild hills. The big or long hills is where I struggle. I figured the 3.54's would help me out just a little bit, but every little bit counts.

ncjeepin, I'd love to take you up on the 4.10's, but I didn't want to pay for someone to set-up the installation. With the full axles, I could just swap them in a weekend. Thanks anyway.

Hey this is a great question. (not trying to steal your thread) but I am sort of in the same situation. I have a 95 YJ (4.0L with 3.07) stock and am going to 33s but I am really worried about my power loss. I know to expect some loss but what actually it will be "concerns me". Are you at point where the power loss is really a pain, and do you have the 4.0 or 2.5?

I have thought about swapping out the axles (3.07 to 4.10) to gain it back but that requires more $$$ and junkyard searches. Do you know if any YJ will work as a bolt in system if you make sure its a YJ and 2.5L with 4.10gears?
