Beware of Online Transmission Seller

I posted here back in Aug. about a problem I was having with an online company from which I purchased a rebuilt AX-5 in Feb. of this year. They warranty the rebuilt tranny for one year and include a $130 R&R reimbursement if a shop performs that service (spelled out on their warranty).

Long story made short...I installed the rebuilt tranny back in Feb., and less than 1500 miles and 6 months later, it locked up. I was in the process of moving to SC when it crapped out so I had to have a shop back home pull the tranny and send it back to the company from which I bought it for diagnosis and repair.

The company called to give me results of what they found when the tranny arrived at their shop. They said the carrier shaft was broken and asked what size tires I was running. Told them 31 X 10.50's and the person I spoke with at Man-Trans, LLC said that was probably the reason the shaft broke. I came to this site to ask the opinion of you more experienced Jeepers if this was BS or what and everyone who replied said the company was FOS for saying the tires caused this failure!

In any event, I got the Jeep down to SC after paying the shop $300 for the R&R and $50 in synthetic lube. I then wrote a very professional letter to the company explaining how they did not honor their warranty, that they misrepresented their company, that I felt the part was defective, etc., etc.

One month has passed since the letter went out and still no response from Man-Trans, LLC so I wanted to warn all of you who may consider purchasing from Man-Trans, LLC that if you have a problem with the tranny they will likely try to find a way to blame your oversized tires for the problem or failure.

They did repair the tranny, which they said would have been a $300 repair (+ two-way shipping) if it were not under warranty. But the fact that I'm out the money for the R&R and they did not honor their contract to reimburse $130 is what prompted this thread. If you do choose to purchase from this company and have a problem, tell them you are running stock tires on your Jeep so they don't try to weasle out of their warranty.

I call shenanigans on these guys. 31 inch tires are just a squeak past 235's. That's one of the biggest crocks I have heard.

BTW, I've been running 25's on my AX5 for several years with no problem. SHENANIGANS!!!!

Check with the Better Business Bureau. Not sure how much of it is principal, or the actual money. If you file a complaint with the BBB, you will probably see some results. It can all be done online. Be sure you read every last letter of the warranty first, just to make sure there is no fine print about tire size. However, the company has already "implied" the warranty by fixing the tranny in the first place. I say go after the rest of your money. 31's ain't ever hurt anything.

I also bought a remanufactured AX 5 from Man Trans. I installed it and it lasted just over a year. One day while driving I went to shift into 5th gear and nothing...it just wasnt there. It was past the one year warrenty so I never bothered to contact them. I took the tranny to a shop and had them take it apart. It had a bunch of problems that should not of happened within one year. I got it all rebuilt and all is good now. I wonder if they just overlook a lot of things to turn out a bunch of trannys and sell them on the internet. Either way, I wont buy from them anymore.

I wonder about this too. My wife and I bought a used car 1 month before our daughter was born. Car had 22,000 miles on it and a new inspection sticker. After about a month she complained about the brakes. I jus thought she didn't know what she was talking about, but I took it back to the dealer anyway. Turns out the pads had eaten into the rotors so far they needed to be replaced. The dealer/owner didn't want to pay for the repairs until I threatened to call the state police (who control the inspections in VA) about the fact that they passed a car on inspection that was in need of brakes. Car was inspected in June, I bought it in July, and after 1200 miles of driving an infant around it needed all new brakes. When you try to buy from a big car dealer they will stick it to you to make a dollar and not care if you ever come back.

the disappearing 5th gear is a well documented issue with the AX-5 tranny. i doubt that it had much to do with the company who is selling the tranny. the "other" problems are another matter though

If you ever need to get a rebulit trans or have yours redone contact National Drivetrain, they have a location in Chicago and always have done me right. You can find them online.

That's my guess; as well as purchasing cheap parts to make up for what they don't get from core returns.
