Mwaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

As of Saturday, November 29, 2008, 2:12 PM EST, IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MWAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAA! Sorta....

With life come new challenges. Namingly:
-MASSIVE drive line vibrations, dunno why yet, under investigation
-ATF leak between trans and T-case. May have to be disassembled
-Speedo not working
-Got my NSS wiring all figured out, only to find that the brake pedal prohibits putting the fricken' thing on the coulum. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
-Shifter linkage works, but doesn't go back quite far enough to engage park dog. Remedy: Reach through floor and shift to park. Leave it like that?!

Here's my shifter:

Stainless Rod goes to meet the original set up in the front. Works pretty well, and didn't cost me too much compared to the kits, which are less desirable cable set ups.

Here's the switch:

It literally clips on to the column! Clip included (yes, I figured it out all on my own!) Now, if I ever get a hold of the guy who designed the brake pedals for these things...

The Write-up will continue, but for now, a toast to a quazi-victory that was 3 months in the making.

Night!

UPDATE, for the millionth time...

Well, since my GF Liz dumped me, no one else is here, and these Lionels only go in a circle still, it time for a UPDATE!!!

The NSS required minor modifications to the brake pedal so that it would clear, because Jeep didn't care that I would want to move my NSS to the column. How dare they!

With that, the wiring sorted out, Shifter sorted, still needing minor adjustments to catch park, I can move on to the next set of Problems.

Driveline Vibrations.

I had both front and rear d/s adjusted to be the right length and balanced. The rear one vibes, probably around 30 mph. I am going to investigae with an angle finder to see which way the diff/t-case needs to be shimmed/spaced out. I'm running the stock shaft, with future SYE aspirations.

The way I understand is that the diff should be at the same angle as the output, minus 2 degrees while at rest. Anyone verify?

I also developed a ATF Leak between the t-case and Trans. Might have to pull the case and RTV it up, or make a cork gasket. Will see.

Also, a nice new 10 Circuit fuse panel is going in under the dash, to run the lock-up, aux. lights in Phase 3, airhorn, possible snowplow, and any other assessories in e the future. I'm looking for a good place to put my relay bank as well, possibly inside the cab, to keep it clean, dry and easy to work on. Suggestions?

The plan is to have her ready for 09. It is completely attainable. This project, working mainly on weekends and nights, is going into its 4th Month and its $3k. A lot of headaches, innovation, and a seemingly endless trip to the local part(s) dealer(s). Hopefully someone will benefit from this writing.

Stay tuned...

-Ed

Yo.

The transfer case/Transmission oil leak.

Took it apart, tried to slip a o-ring in where I thought it should be and seal it up, but it still was leaking.

Here's the seal:

Basic Rubber O-ring. Didn't Work. It seems like the bolts don't pull the 2 units close enough together to compress it nicely.

Here's what the joint looks like together:

I'm Thinking about laying a medium-sized bead of Black RTV to make the seal on the t-case face, around the lip that extends outward, seen here:

Anybody done this? Jeepin95, advise?

Should have this thing on the road by Sunday of next year. I'm amidst a wiring project as well, a 10-block fuse panel for accessories and such is fresh under the dash:

I'm hooking lights, airhorn, electric fan, ect to it. I'm debating on how I should set this up, input please:

1) make the block always hot.
2) Put the block on a separate toggle in the dash, to be able to shut down all circuts when nessisary
3) Get the 12v from a keyed source

-If it's always hot, should I avoid having the Lock-up wired to it? That draws always, correct?
-Do I need to put a fuse between the block and my 12V source? I've got a good heavy cable running to it.

Will keep y'all posted.

Well, its Been almost 3 Months since my last post here, and I'm happy to report the patient is back on the road, and it is a great success. Overall driveability from the TF to the TH is a difference of night and day. Waiting for my mileage numbers to come back now. The floor around the trans is much cooler, Highway RPM is much lower with the overdrive and lockup, at 60 mph, i'm about 1500 RPM, with 3.07 final gears. Its great. I'll have more pics on the final button ups soon. Would like to complete the thread.

However, the other Phases, the 8.8, the lights, snowplow and such may have to wait. I'll be beginning my next project: Resoring a 66 Mustang Hardtop and cramming in a 300 Inline 6. Yes, a 300. Would like to get this project going so I have something to pick up chicks with and drive while I'm putting the 8.8 in.

Thanks for the help from all here at JF. And Novak Adapters. And my Father and Grandfather. Much thanks.

Don't be afraid of a project. If I did it, so can you.

Very good writeup. kudos to you for doin something different. I'm sorry I really can;t help you with any of your issues(a result of you doing something different I suppose). One question and I'm sorry if I missed it, what was the point in combining the two cases, I thought you were doing it to avoid a SYE? but then saw later that it was a similar output as the stock transfercase does. just curious and I will reread it just to make sure I didnt miss it. I like it though. Even though its on the back burner, I need to see more pics of this jeep. from the top side not the underbelly......I know what mine looks like. Far too much of my time is spent under it. All in all though It looks good.

I found out the reasoning now. I'm on board now.

Oh man,

I haven't updated this in a WHILE! Sorry bout that fellas. You never really know how much work one of these build threads is until you have one.

I'll try and finish this thread off, I left out a few key pieces at the end. SPOILER ALERT: I have almost 10,000 miles on the swap with no hard issues yet (KNOCK ON WOOD). THe gains of MPG may have been beefed up by a lot of my pre-swap sources, but right now in real world driving, I get about 17-20 MPG combined, which is better than my 14 Combined with the TF. Also, I can cruise the AC Expressway at 70 MPH, 1800 RPM, with 3.07's and 285 tires.

Thanks for the comments!

Alright, the Revival of an old thread:

Last weekend I put on a set of Dayton Timberline 30x9.5 A/T's. They look great with the wore-in 2'' BDS.

Bad news is they cost me my overdrive lockup and about 15 mile per hour. Thank you 3.07. I'll be going the Ford 8.8 with 3.73's route sooner than expected, apparently, but it's not a bad thing! I do have a few questions about my upcoming project:

The 3 most critical questions are:
-Will the pumpkin hit the fuel skid at full travel? I'm not completely stock height, but only about 2'' up. I've heard it gets tight, even to the point of exhaust issues.
-I know the bolt pattern is the same (5 on 4.5). I run stock alloy wheels. Is backspacing going to be an issue? I do NOT want to buy new wheels just to clear the axle.
-Driveshaft. Sorry to beat it to death. The offset of the diff to one side (1-7/16'' to the pass. side). With this, my lengthened drive train (700R/231) am I able to go SS SYE and CV shaft, or do I have to stay single cardian? I read somewhere that CV doesn't take too well to offset.

Input is much appreciated. I plan to order material/pick up the axle as early as next week. If the thread comes back to life, I'll finish my old write up and add the details for the 8.8. Thanks!

Soon to come...

Going from this:

To this:

With these:

And this:

I should have all the details posted up this week. Right now it's all running and driving, although I have a substantial vibration above 60 mph. I suspect a few 1-2 degree shims will take care of that in 2 weeks. Stay tuned for Phase 2: 8.8, SUA, SYE/CV setup, 'Factory' Disks and emergency brake, and 3.73 gears behind the 700R4. A recipe for excellence.

Very nice! I'm definitely going to look into doing this TC swap when I do my SBC/700R4 install in the future, I like that idea much better than paying $500 for an adapter!

Looking awesome. I know there are good write-ups on 8.8 swaps. I recently did the swap and love it. Keep up the good work.
