Bad TPS?

My 4.0L YJ has been randomly sputtering (getting worse overtime, almost constant now), backfiring when letting off the gas, and having problems with Overdrive and shifting into gears at times. Just wont go in. I assumed it was the TPS, I checked it and got a reading of about 4.Xv at open throttle and 1.Xv at idle. Is it normal for the sweep to go in reverse and not up to 5 and down to 0? Or could a leaking header cause these problems? Any ideas? I bought a new TPS from NAPA and wasn't getting any readings on it so I put the old one back in.

Thanks in advance!

When testing the TPS, you are looking for dead spots. The range goes roughly from 0-5v, but all of them that I have tested show similar to yours. Did you see any positions of the throttle that resulted in no voltage?

The back firing is most likely timing. Place a timing light on her, if the timing jumps back and forth it is the timing chain.

The shifting is another animal, check your fluid for whiteness, water.

your check engine light does not cover all. only the items that it has sensors on.

my check engine light does not stay on when a problem occurs, although it will tell me things when i do the check engine test.

check your timing for jumping. that is the first place i will look when back firing occurs.
