Ba 10

Hey my clutch has gone bad in my Ba/10 trans. Online a new clutch kit runs around $350!!!!! Is there any other option for me, ie upgrade to a better trans that i could find cheaper(same price or a lil higher even) in a junkyard? It pains me to dump almost $400 into a junky trans...

You can do an AX-15 Trans/tcase swap for around that price if you get a good deal on the trans.

The part that gets hard is the BA-10 tcase setup is 21 spline and the AX-15 is 23 spline.

Hit the FAQ, there is a few writeups on BA-10 swaps to better trans.

Autozone has the complete kit, clutch, pressure plate, slave cylinder, and pilot bearing for $160. PepBoys has it for $169. NAPA also carries it, but I don't remember the price.
And the BA10/5 will last you a long time if you don't abuse it and change the gear oil in it every 50K miles.

This is also true.

well my ba/10 has over 250,000 miles on it and seems to be taking the abuse ok. i am defiantely going to look into that pepboys/autozone clutch kit b/c i dont mind the 160. jcwhitney, summitracing, and quadratec's kits were all well over that price... if i were to find an ax15 couldnt i just take the tcase that is bolted up to it or will that not work out well?

The BA10/5 has a 21 spline output shaft where the AX-15 has a stronger 23 spline output shaft. You can reuse the transfer case if you change the input shaft to a 23 spline.

Best case, least amount of work really, you would get the trans and tcase together.

Change the gear oil in the transfer case, and the ATF Dextron III in the t-case while you have them out.

Not to hijack the thread, but can anyone tell me why mine won't stay in reverse. As soon as I start letting out the clutch it pops out and I have to force it to stay in. I can hear and feel it popping, and grinding if that helps. Thanks for any help, Jon.

The friction parts for the BA-10 and AX-15 are exactly the same. The BA-10 throwout bearing may be used with the 1988.5-1993 AX-15i (internal slave) without incident, but you'll need to swap hydraulics to use a 1994-1999 AX-15e (external slave.)

Apparently, the input pilot on the AX-15i is the same OD as the BA-10, but the AX-15e has a larger input and requires a different bushing (early 1970's CJ w/V8-304 and three-speed.)

I've certainly never paid anything over $150 for a clutch kit for my 88 - whether I was putting it in front of a replacement BA-10 (I was there anyhow,) or putting it in front of my AX-15. Where are you shopping?

Granted, I did get the replacement BA-10s for the asking. Their only saving grace.
