Now the steering feels reaaaal tight...
I swapped the same axles.. dana 35/30 from another yj with 4:10s.
The steering is tight.. not sensitive.. but tight when you your goin around a corner.. like you turn the wheel 90 degrees and its like its binding...
I swapped knuckles over, torqued the upper and lower ball joint nuts to what chilton said... should be good?
It just doesnt come back to center like it did before..
any suggestions?
thanks!
did you change any of the steering stuff over???? you could have a problem w/ the tie rods binding in the knuckles.
another option is the front axle is stuck in 4wd. if the vaccum disconnect is frozen in the 4wd position, it would make steering feel tight.
good luck
YEP I did swap the knuckles over.... BUt i used the same ones that were on there, meaning-- My stock axles had abs, the new to me ones did not, so i took the knuckles off the stock axle and left everything else together.. just placed the tie road/knuckles and everything up onthe springs while swapping the axles.. then bolted it all together..
It doesnt have the pulling feel of being in 4wd...

If the disconnect is locked, it won't effect the steering unless there is also a locker in place. No locker, no steering difference.
My front axle is currently locked in place, so the transfer case is the only place that changes between 2wd and 4wd. There is no difference in steering from before when the CAD was not locked.
Could it be from over tightening the ball joints??
Also.. The rear end i put in sounds awful... It sounds like sandy bearings and gets louder the faster you go.. im takin it slow for now and waitin to seeif the noise gets better or worse... may need a new axle already:brickwall
Assuming you reinstalled and properly torqued everything, (How good is your torque wrench - try a different wrench, same settings)
The steering not returning to center could be a caster issue. There are no two axles built exactly alike. Caster adjustments can only be made using shims to my understanding
You might want to check the front end on an alignment rack.
as far as noises go, I'd be inclined to pull the diff covers and have a look. Replacing the oil would be a good thing
Ive only driven the jeep 55 miles since putting the axles in and changed the diff fluid last night, it was milk chocolate colored..........
Should i have it aligned??
I knwo it is 4:10s because i took the diff off and counted the teeth and divided them
Spigger73, there are a few ways to determine gear ratio:
1: there should be a tag on the diff--look at the numbers (a stock 4cyl manual Tranny YJ should have 4:10 in front, 4:11 in rear)
2. Jack it up and turn the driveshaft. Count how many revolutions of the shaft it takes to turn the tire one full revolution.
3. Take off diff cover and count ring and pinion teeth, then divide ring by pinion to get ratio.
ohhpe,
Were there any metal shavings or pieces in the " milk chocolate" lube when you changed it? Sounds like you got water in there and tore something up. I'd start out with the easiest possibility and go from there. check U-joints by trying to wiggle the rear driveshaft. If it's tight, then it might be time to open up the diff again and see what wobbles in there.
sorry I was hoping that the photo's would show more, seems to look ok to me.
did you happen to grease up the ball joints? maybe the TRE's are to tight? I would take it to some one local that knows steering really well and see what they have to say about it.
Sorry I would take more pics of the steering but the GF took the digital camera out of town and those were the only ones i took while doing the swap:brickwall
There Were No metal shavings in the diff fluid.. i did get into some water as i took it wheeling the day i got it done..
The rear drive shaft is tight and nothing wiggles in the Ring n Pinion.. The only thing i can think of is that there is surface rust on the gears.. possibly the bearings too??
As far as the TRE's... i didnt even take those apart, i only disconnected the ball joint nuts and swapped the whol esteering setup that way.. and i slapped some grease on the ball joints as well..
not yet... i have only put about 120 miles on the jeep since the swap.. it still binds when turning and the differential is still super noisy..
im actually gonna pull the diff cover today aand see if i cant find anything wrong with it.. last time it looked like chocolate milk.. but i think thats cuz i went wheeling. no metal pieces were in it.
maybe you should bite the bullet and change all the bearings in the housing. i don't know where you got it from, but it could have been hanging around for a while w/o fluid in it or something, and caused the bearings to go bad.
just my .02c:wave:
it depends. if it's just the bearings that need replacing, you can do that yourself for fairly cheap, but it won't do anything for your binding problem, so maybe you have more issues going on w/ that axle. my advice is to find another newer one, and inspect it carefully before installation.
well the binding is in the steering of the front axle...
the noise is from the rear axle/
