Axle swap

Does anyone know what a 78 ford f250 would have for axles, I can get a POS cheap and anything about the engine, its from a mechanics shop and he said the engine still runs strong. im looking into dropping them in an 89YJ if that helps at all.

YES, buy it fast,as long as its ok. It has the D44 front and the D60 rear. If you put them under the jeep you will never buy another axle. It could take some mod. to make them fit but it would kicka$$ on the trail. My .02

I would not put in the eng. because it is not Fuel injected but buy it for the axles because they are the bada$$.

Dana 44 front, with larger lock out hubs, 8 lugs bolt pattern
Dana 60 Full floater rear with 30 splined axles

to mount the front, move the passenger side spring perch inward .... the rear, you'll have to move both perches
& shock mounts on both
the front is a lo pinion & your able to run as low as 5.87 gears

I bought a set awhile back for 350 bucks... the front had dual pistion calipers.... turned around & sold them & made a decent profit out of it

as far as not ever needing another axle.... well that may not be true, you'll probably want a D60 front later

you can use the Tcase to, it may be a Np205 a hell of alot stronger than the Np231

Gator you say i would have to move the perches inward on the rear wouldnt that make them stick out a little farther on either side, so would there be any other modifications I would have to do. And with the front, if I move only the passenger side perch in wont that uncenter the axle from the rest of the jeep?

Oh does anyone have any links for tech articles of writeups of people doing this swap? I mena the same swap from a ford to a jeep not just a 44 front and the 60 rear.

Unless you want to run full width axles then they will have to be cut down.

I am doing the swap now and had the axles cut to the TJ width, a little wider but not too much and coils/4 links. (D60 high pinion in the rear, D60/D44 hig pinion front)

From what I can remember of the Ford stuff is, if the truck had eight lugs then it had a heavier weight rating D44 than the five lug version.

Good Luck,

yeah the d44 won;t be the last axle you ever buy, thursday afternoon saw/heard a v8 bronco snap a superior d44 climbing out of a creek (needless to say i went another way), im not saying they are weak just that they arn't invincible. but still under a jeep esp if you keep the stock engine it'll be pretty dam hard to break it so go for it

Last time I Checked, Tj & Yj's were the same track width... but who knows maybe they changed within the last month

as far moving the passenger side perch inward, NO it wont off center anything... the drivers side perch is cut into the 3rd member housing...
its not like your moving both perches to the left or right.. your only moving one, because the F250 frame is wider than the Yj's

if you want to narrow them, but yet have a little more width, have them narrowed to Old Bronco Specs... from 67-72... they are 1.5" wider than Yj or Tj's... on the front only cut the long side down, on the rear... well you'll have to cut both sides

the longer the shaft the less likely you'll have to break it, thats the main reason alot of guys are staying full width... because they are CHEAPER!... plain & simple

but thats totally up to you
the front will be Lo pinion & so will the rear... on both axles
if for no other reason, buy them anyways, if you dont feel like running them, turn around & sell them, but add a couple hundred to the price, you can easily sell them for 500-600 bucks

but for the same price you'd pay for those axles you could easily buy a set of 2.5 ton rockwells & throw detroits in them & still narrow them.. cheaper, plus have a hell of a low gear... only draw back,42's would be the smallest tire you could run.... but then again 42's aint such a bad idea anyways.....

Look at his Sig, & besides if you could build a set cheaper & be a hell of alot stronger than any other thing axle produced by the Big 3 ..... Why not
Steering units as low as 350 each, non steer 300 each. Detroit lockers 400 each... hmmmm doesnt take a guenius to figure that one out
Oh you maybe wondering about width... knock the dual wheel adapters off the rear & your WMS-WMS is 72"
fronts, cut the long side of the housing down 7.25" & run a short side shaft in both sides

& being that they run 1550 Ujoints.... it beats the hell out of a 297X

only other axle assembly running that large of a joint, is Sunray Engineering with there 9" center sections, with 35 splines, with Dana 60 axle tubes & knuckles & Dana 70 outters..
but for close to 4500 bucks a pop, NO THANKS

ya it says that he has a 4 banger. just a question though why do you have to run 42 inch tires with the 2 1/2 ton axles?

Gator you say you could build a set of axles cheaper, then buying the ones I found, but if i got these for like 300bucks along with the t-case from the truck, and possibly the engine depending on what it is (havent got that far yet). How could you build a set cheaper then that kind of deal, even if i paid 500 for the f250, wouldnt it still be a good deal if i stripped the axles , t-case, and the engine.

Oh and for all of you who keep bringing up the fact it is a 4banger, I dont plan on leaving it like that, it isnt a daily driver it is a build up. SO once I get things going expect alot to change.

I plan on putting in a chevy small block 305, unless I can strip the engine out of either this 78 f250, or an 84 bronco, I know the bronco has a 351, I just dont know what the f250 has, I will have to check.
