Axle strength

Hi,

I need some information because I definitely do not want to change my axles under my YJ because here in Germany itīs very hard to find some cheap ones and I donīt know how high the chipping costs are from the states to Germany for a rearend.
So what do you think what are the biggest tires to go with a dana 35c with the 30 spline kit and an axle truss and the dana 30 with the big 297X joints?
Thanks for your answers!

it all depends on your use. drivertrain, diff type and things, road use: i would say you'll be relativ save to go with 35, but nobody buys 35's for road use only right? :-)
for mild to medium off-road i'd say 33's, but i'd pick a tyre that is not to wide. your d30 will be able to handle those fairly good, but cary spare shafts for the d35. you should be able to find used ones for about 50€ a piece.
if you want to abuse it: stick with 31's and also carry spare parts.

where in Germany are you? if close to the belgium border i can direct you to some good places for new/used parts.

Hi,

Iīm living near the airport Hahn in the Hunsrück. Iīve visited Belgium for the off road park in Bilstain and as soon as possible we want to go to chateau cherimont.
So you can see itīs not only for street use
The 35c can handle 33s yeah, but what is it when equipped with the 30 spline kit and a truss?

if seen 35 being runned with 30 spline kit snap in 2. however that was without a truss. i should help a greath deal since the prime weakness of a d35 is bending axleshafts....

did you concider a ford 8.8 swap? you should be able to find a junkyard explorer in germany or holland.

how did you like bilstain? never been there but i plan on it next spring. is it better than the nearby scayn?

goodluck

Yep the truss should help alot I think. Well Iīll see what to do, ...
What is scayn?
Bilstain was cool but not too hard. Alot of stones and mud and nice trails all over the terrain.

after a brief google search to get you a link i found that its is the same as the chateaux cherimont you mentiond.
i've been there 2 years ago, and technicaly it was the best i've ever been to. if you get my jeep in order, i will go there this sunday. it basicly has everything, its 40 Ha big, and its basicly a intire hill filled with trails. it recently came under new management, and they divided everything in degrees of difficulty. i you take the hard trail after rain damage should be expected. if you come in group i would make sure there are at least a few trailers to tow damaged rig home. the main problems after rain are the clay/rock surface and deep mudholes. but all in all its is a fun terain and from what i've been told the new owner made bypasses on the risky parts.

actualy putting portals under a jeep are even more difficult that a good SOA, and nearly inpossible to ge passed any european inspection.

I definetily do not want to rum portal axles under my YJ!
My future plans are going in the direction like 4-6" suspension lift, 2" bodylift, 35" tires and lockers front and rear.
My favourite off road areas are the woods with running trails and mud!

I did some pretty hardcore trails on the stock Dana 35 with 33s and never busted a shaft. I think with some sort of alloy shafts you should be able to sport 35s. The key is always consider the equipment when on an obstacle. If you let your commen sense drive and not your ego, you should be ok on 35s. But again, totally depends on your driving style. That said, I agree with the truss recommendation. The Dana 35 housing is weak. The tubes will spin and flex.
