Axle Question

I was checking out car-parts.com for ford 8.8's and came across two categories, the v-8 and v-6. Are there any differences. The v-8's had like 4 axles and the 6's had bout 15. One other thing I noticed is a majority of the 6's with 4.10's(which i was looking for) said "locking". can someone please explain to me what exactly they mean by locking? They run from down in the 600's - 1000's. Now if we're talkin real lockers, 6sumthin isn't a bad deal IMO. I would ask in the TJ 8.8 thread, but they're getting a bit snappy over there. I think the caddy coil ride is making them all a bit soft and thin skinned. (heheh, j/k)

Was looking a little more and found the Chrysler 8 1/4 out of a Cherokee rear. What is that?

TIA
Craig

when they say "locking" i think they are referring to limited slip.
i'm not sure really what the difference is with the ones from v8 compared to the 6 cyl, but i heard there is a differ=ence..

the chrysler 8 1/4" was athe axle used instead of a Dana 35. But in 87-89 XJ's had an option with a dana 44 rear. The 8 1/4" realy iasnt an improvement so iwould say avoid it.

As for the difference between V6 and V8, i have no idea but heard there was a difference. Also "locking" prolly means it has a limnitd slip, no lockers came in 8.8"s from the factory.

I currently own an explorer with an 8.8 and from the research i have done there is no difference between v6 and v8. The only differences should be the gear ratio and whether it has limited slip or not.

Thanx for the info. I figured it was just an LSD, but decided to check. The v8's didnt seem to have the LSD. Looks like i'll be headin for the v6 4.10.

if you are thinking about getting a "lunchbox" style locker in the future, you may want to go with the open diff. the lockers for the open are less expensive, and there are more choices than the lsd carrier.
i used the lsd for a few trips, and it let me down.... i went with the powertrax no slip, and like it muuuch better on the trail, but the on road characteristics are a bit quirky
just thought you might like to know.
