Will YJ and CJ5 axles interchange

Brought 1988 YJ in December and 1976 CJ5 this week. Will the axles and gearing from cj5 interchange with yj. This is my first post, so much work to do to both.

I ran 35s/4:10 gears with my 2.5 for a year. And hated it! 4hi was completely useless. I can't imagine that a 4.2 or 4.0 would be much to much better. I would go for at least 4:56s. I also have broken 3 d30 shafts 1 was chromo. I broke the ears off of 1 stock shaft with the 4cyl and 35s but I was beating on it pretty hard.

Found an HP Dana 44 on CL, any thoughts on that route? Also, his asking price 450 seems quite high.... Thoughts on that as well?

Dana HP 44
Driver side drop
WMS to WMS 57"
Disc Brakes
5x5.5 bolt pattern
4.10 gears Open Carrier
Setup up for Spring Over.
Flat Top Knuckles
Warn Hubs
I bought it with the intent of putting it under my YJ but not going that route.

I think youd be better of with your Dana 30 HP. You will need new rims or adapters and if you don't want a soa you'll have to do modifications to the axle and of you do you'll have to spend done money on steering. Your looking at over 600$ on the low side when you can regear the front by your self for 400 or less.

I use my YJ almost exclusively off road on the rocks. With 35's the 8.8 with 4.10's has held up well (aussie locker). I have broken 5 axles shafts in the d30 (spartan in the d30), I doubt you would ever break one if you are on road mostly with a weekend here or there on the trails, but for me the d30 is a weak point that I will be dealing with soon.

I have used xj, tj and yj shafts, I can't tell any real difference in strength. My vacuum disconnect has never let go, but the shafts are not suited for my purposes.
