Axle / Gear Question

Planning on doing some axle swapping and regearing come spring time and I have a few questions. I've pretty much made up my mind on going Ford 8.8 with discs to replace the D35. My big question is should I replace the D30 up front? I plan on sticking with 33's for a while, MIGHT consider 35's in the distant future. Along that same line, I can't decide on 4.10, 4.56 or 4.88 gears. Opinions?

you will be good to stay with the 30 up to 35s. And if you have the 2.5 go with 4.88 but if you have the 4.0 go with 4.10

To be perfectly honest, I was really hoping for answers exactly like yours ashland!

Thoughts on regearing the d30 to 4.10 versus swapping it for a 4 banger D30 already geared 4.10? I would assume the swap is cheaper, but is there anything to watch out for when doing this or is it pretty straight forward?

lots of times its alot cheaper to change the entire front from a 4cly... (for reference I trashed one a few years ago after tripping over it for more then 3 months..) If you can find one get all the brake stuff still on it since there your brake components my not fit the replacement axle.

What he said. 2.5 = 4.88, 4.0 = 4.10
D30 is good up to 35's, what you save swapping that front you can later upgrade to chromos if you want/feel nervous.

If you can find a d30 in 4.10, swap is better/cheaper. Might cost you $100, where gears alone will be twice that(not adding labor), and you'll still have yours for spare parts like axles/hubs/brakes/bearings/vacuum disconnect.

Yeah, what these guys said swapping will be way cheaper. Even if it doest come with squat you can swap everything over

If you're going to regear you might as well swap the carrier with a locker. Otherwise your only option with an axle swap is a lunchbox locker.

I'm gonna be the lone dissenter here and say if you regear to 4.10 and then go to 35's later you'll wish you would've gone to at least 4.56's. The swap in front will like be cheaper though if you stick with 4.10's.

don't forget the lower you go in gearing (the higher the number)
you get a smaller ring and pinion. Keep that it mind A smaller ring and pinion with big tires a lockers and a heavy foot go boom!

Meh. I like that gear ratio on the freeway. I don't have any problems with it.

Thats's because you don't have the 4.56's.

With 35's I would at the least go 4.88 and even 5.13 if ya can.

True, I've got 4.88's and wish I could've gone deeper for trail use, although it would be a bear on the free way.

BUT he's got a teralow 4:1 so he makes up for it.

X2 I echo what he said especially if you live where you have mountains. 4.10 ain't that great with 35's. I have the 4.2 w/ 4.0 head ax15 and Im rockin 4.56's with 33's on the street and the 35's offroad.

My jeep does fine with 35's and 4.10. I'm sure 4.56 would be better but is it worth the 800 bucks or so of rehearing two axles? It's not to me. I plucked my D30 from CL with gears I needed for 150 bucks.

Doing the swap pretty much a piece of cake. It's just nuts and bolts.

1994 YJ Wrangler, 4.0, AX15, NP231, 35x12.50x15 BFG KM2s, 4" RC lift, 1" lift Boom Shackles, 1" BL, 4.10 gears, 8.8 LSD in rear and D30 Aussie Locker in front, on-board air conversion, Ramsey RE8000 winch.
