AX5 where do ya put the oil?

I'm embarrassed to say that I can't find the hole for adding oil to the AX-5 transmission. ('92 Wrangler, 2.5L)

Can anyone tell me in detail where it is before I go to the work of removing the sheet metal to which the shift boots attach?

This is the AX-15, but you may see what you're looking for.

The AX5 fill plug is about halfway up the Trans casing on the PASSENGER side, about 6" back from the front edge of the skid plate. Takes a 15/16" box wrench, just like the drain plug, which is bottom, center, front.

Excellent! Is it easier to get to with the sheet metal out of the way -- the sheet metal to which both shift boots are attached, and through which both shift levers stick?

If you can reach if from the top, that's a much easier and cleaner way to go about doing it, yes.

Just make sure you don't pull out the bolt labeled "Do not remove" (stamped on the bolt head).

Fill plug is located on the passenger side in the rear back past the mid plate , the only 15/16 plug on that side.
I don't know why the plug on the drivers side is marked "DO NOT REMOVE" other than the fact it is much lower than the fill plug , however removing the plug wont hurt a thing other than under filling the transmission.
