Ax5 transmission trouble

I'm having problems with my 2.5 liter 1990 yj. I just did the whole exhaust system, it ran fine for a day or too, now there's an awful notice coming from the transmission.. It sounds like a grinding noise, it happens in neutral, but the noise stops when I press the clutch. Please, before I pay to pull the transmission, does anyone have any idea what this is?? And also its been idling high and running rough in general, any way to fix the idle??
Thanks!

Is there any problem driving or shifting?

Since the noise goes away when you press in the clutch pedal, it could be a clutch issue as well. eg: Bad throw out bearing.

Check around and see if all vauum hoses are on and not broken.

Has it been tuned up lately, plugs, wires, cap and rotor do wonders for idle and power.

But your other issue is more than likely the throw out bearing. Might as well do the clutch and pilot bearing too.

There's no problem at all shifting, it's strange.. We thought about the throw out bearing, but that noise usually happens when you press the clutch in, right?

When the clutch is out, there is no pressure on the bearing, and that is when the noise happens. When the pedal is pressed in, it loads up the bearing and stops the noise.

yeap, give it long enough and it will do it even when pressed in. Ever see what a throw out bearing looks like full seized up?

Since you will be pulling the tranny, may I suggest centre force dual-friction clutch? Also since your ax5 is 1990, it the slave and throwout bearing are one unit. Have fun.

I wouldn't recommend any Centerforce clutch. They're well suited to high rpm/high load situations (like race cars) but they're nothing but completely wasted money on Jeeps.

LuK clutches are better suited than almost any other brand, and the less expensive LuK RepSet will do fine.

be sure to have the flywheel inspected and/or resurfaced since you're in there already. any fluid leaking from the bell housing?

give the input shaft a good shake. If it flops all around get an ax15 and love a real transmission lol. I've had bad experiences with 4banger trannys.

FWIW, the clutch kit I bought from NAPA was a LUK clutch kit in NAPA packaging. Not for an AX5, but you might want to check because it was way cheaper than anywhere else I could locate a LUK clutch.

Yep I just bought one for an ax-5 from NAPA. The counter said the parts in the kit are made by the oem manufacturer for Chrysler including the internal slave and are sold as NAPA. 130 for the deluxe rebuild kit...

I'm working on it all day today.. Do you guys have any tips on pulling the transmission?? I'm taking your advice and getting the clutch kit from napa. I just need help, I know there's 4 bolts, is there any tricks to getting it and t-case out easily?

I always pull the t-case and tranny in one go. Guess it would be easier just to pull one at a time, that way you can manually pull them off? They don't weigh too much each..
