ax15 swap

i know that alot of guys with the ax15 are swapping from a internal slave to the external and its been discussed alot so maybe you guys can help me out...my buddys trans needs a rebuild in his 94 YJ....it has a external slave already but he has a transmission that is internal slave....he says the input shaft is different or something...i havent looked at it yet but what is it gonna take to get it working?? everything i found online doesnt say anything about them being different

They should be the same. Count the splines, measure the shafts, make sure the trannies are the same leangth. If they are it's the same thing. I know the AX-15 bell housing and tranny are one piece though. If the bell housings are different on the external/internal it may not work.

Check out the discussion on swapping the bearing retainer in this thread...

that's probably your buddy's problem. unless he's talking about the pilot bushing/bearing, which might be different between the early and later transmissions.

I think your right on the bell housing being the difference, as far as mounting the slave external. Not to bust balls, but the bell housing and tranny are not one unit. When I replaced my tranny I reused the stock bell housing. I do think however the AX5 may be a one piecer, but not the 15.

You're right, I had to go downstairs and look at my AX-15. The bell housing is separate.

Sorry to high jack the thread. Other than the obvious, one being internal vs. one external, are there any major advantages to converting? Mine is fine for now, just asking for future reference.
