ax15 swap

putting a 5.9 v8 in my 88 yj. want to keep the manual transmission so i need a ax15 and transfer case.[ my yj is a 4cyl/ax5 ].will a ax15 from a cherokee work? i found a np231[23 spline] from a yj i am supposed to go look at. i need a ax15 and need to know will anything work other than one from a yj?

Yes.
You will simply need to drill new holes for the transfer case so that it sits at the correct angle.
It is very easy to do, especially considering that the holes are only there for the studs / nuts to clamp the two together, and do not provide any locating of their own.

Sorry, forgot photo. not mine. I did mine three days ago. It literally only takes about 25 minutes.
Start with 1/8, then maybe 1/4 or 5/16, then 7/16


The other thing is that you will need to modify your ax5 transfer case shifter or get the on from a YJ ax15.
The ax5 doesn't quite bolt on. The top holes that bolt to the shift tower need elongated inwards, and the side holethat bolts to the ax15 needs to be drilled. Ihad to bend the rearmost mount point that attaches to that transfer case sud out of the way. It feels plenty strong enough without it.
