AX15 shift tower bushing
 
During my 93 YJ buildup, I have torn down and rebuilt the AX 15 transmission completed the external slave modification, and am well into the 231 rebuild. During the AX 15 saga I found my shift tower bushing, AKA shift tower oil seal part number 4864226X (don't forget the "X") was so badly deteriorated it was recognizable only as scum in the bottom of the shift tower. It took a lot to come up with that part number as it is not in the official parts list from Chrysler, nor is it noted in the official Factory Service Manual, and I only knew that the deteriorated ring of necrotic bushing effluent was an actual part once was from prior Toyota tranny experiences. (Judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement) The dealership will tell you that you have to purchase the entire shift tower assembly, which is expensive. Do not confuse this part with the small nylon bushing on the bottom of the shifter, nor with the rubber seal that sits around the shifter shaft and stops water and trail salsa from getting into your gearbox. Those are the parts the partsprofessionals at the dealership will try to sell you.
Having found the part number with previous assistance from the forum, and locating the part at Morris Jeep in Florida, I promised to post a brief writeup on it with photos, so I am keeping that promise. The part ended up only costing $5, but add shipping and the interminable wait for shipping to Hawaii. This part nestles in the bed of the shift tower, it cradles the BIG KNOB on the bottom of the shifter. You can install it without removing the shifter knob pins from the shift tower by merely squeezing the sides of the oil seal and force it by. It then recovers its shape. This part is known to deteriorate with time, and in doing so it allows a lot of slop in the shifter, it is the same part number used in several Toyota transmissions R151 etc but also not available thru them. The AX 15 has now been hung back into the truck with new seals, bearings and synchros (I hope it works.......) , new clutch assembly, external slave conversion completed and the skid plate back on, but the 231J is still torn apart awaiting some hydraulic press work for me to do, and awaiting the mode spring on order from the dealership since the PO or whomever on a previous tear down left this part out when it was reassembled--no wonder my front shaft was ALWAYS locked, couldn't turn it by hand when in 2WD mode. I woulda figured worn shift fork bushings, but you can always be surprised when you tear into a gear case.............fodder for another thread, at another time when it is all back together and finally back on the road/trail.

So to install it you have to press those two pins on the sides out? My seal in my ax-15 was also a gonner... It was literally falling apart down there with chunks already missing... I removed what was left and ordered a new one from 4wd.com... I never got around to putting it in... Now that I'm getting in deep waters out here in the winter I want to install it... Thanks!

you can put the seal into some really hot water and it will bend around the 2 pins. It will conform back when it cools off

^^ What Mark 05059 said. You can heat the seal, slip it under one pin, then compress it a bit and squeeze it past the second pin. It will spring back/has a "shape memory."

For whatever reason, you can't press those pins out without seriously breaking something. I tried doing that and realized it would take force beyond the strength of the shift tower casting. Hot water worked on the seal.

The seal is identical between the AX15 and the AX5 as I have understood, but when I looked it up in Quadratec it has a different PN 4864220X. Maybe Max will jump in and set us straight, but look on quadratec and I'll keep searching.

Morris 4 X 4 doesn't show this part for their AX5 on the exploded diagram, wasn't helpful--however, I replaced one in my Toyota W56 series Aisin transmission and it was identical to the Jeep. My W56 is behind a 4 cyl, the W56 is very very similar to the AX5, and even shares some interchangeable parts. However since that oil seal is listed in Quadratec as a separate PN, and I've never replaced one in an AX5, I suppose I'd have to go with the diff PN.

I found this to be a very satisfying bit of work.

I didn't need to use heat or water to get the new bushing past the pins.

It is a bit annoying to remove the sliding collar from the tower, as you have to twist the collar to disengage it from the pins while depressing it against the spring, and there's not much to grab with your fingers. There may be a better way.

So what was your experience with the PN for the AX5 oil seal, from you sig it looks like you have a 4 banger/AX5. And reading the PN from the bag in your first photo, it looks like you got the AX15 PN unit.

Actually no, this was for a AX15; I am swapping in the 4.0.

However yes, I suspect it is in fact the same shift tower bushing, as the towers are qutie similar (but they are not identical).

Is there a noticeable difference with the shifting with the new seal?

I'm pretty sure mine is gone and has disintegrated into the tranny. I may go out and check right now.

Edit: Mine has indeed disintegrated. I'll go ahead and get a new one.

Same question, is there a major difference in the shifting?
