Guys....AWESOME!!!! thank you so much for the info. I have nothing to loose so why not tear it apart. Son of sam did you have any kind of noise before you tore the tranny down? Wondering if we both have a transfer case problem beings that you already tore your tranny down. You did say though that you tore it down a while ago it is the same with me, I put the rebuilt in around beginning of 2005

Good luck with your AX15 rebuild. I got a rebuild kit from transparts
via ebay. It included bearings, seals, and synchros. I would suggest
replacing the 5th gear snap ring, do not put the old one back in as they
are a known weakness--get the set of 8 or 10 from the dealer as they
come in varying thicknesses. If you need part numbers when you get to
this I can get them for you. I had access to a full shop with bearing
splitters and several bearing presses which came in handy when I did my
rebuild (military auto hobby shop). I found it took a few days for the
synchros to bed in after the rebuild, I ran standard gear lube GL 4 not
5 as per Pat, for about a thousand miles then switched to Redline MT 90
like Rustywrangler has been known to recommend.
I also rebuilt the NP231 at the same time, it was a simple and
satisfying task.
Take photos, use many ziplock bags and labels for all your parts. You
can even get special markers to be able to write on the parts for
orientation if needed.

Arrrrrr. I checked my files. Transparts Warehouse Inc (866)223-5656 Bechelli Lane Redding, CA. Kit was $155. Mine included the seals as well. All of them. The person I ended up talking to on the phone was Randy Laskowsky, there is a very knowledgeable person there named Megan. The email add I used to them was transpts@pacbell.net Their part number on my invoice was BK163JWS, and it was Jan of this year I bought it.
Short answer--yes, this is the place.
I don't know why the set looks different from what I got though. Call them ask for Randy and he will help you. Sorry I didn't get this info to you sooner, I didn't see this until just now.

Don't forget the snaprings

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showt...+gear+snapring

View the photo kloppk put in this thread. It shows where the snaprings go for the 5th gear, both counter 5th gear and mainshaft 5th gear. To be quite honest, I don't know which one of these is notorious for breaking all the time, but I think it is the counter 5th gear snapring that goes toes-up. At any rate, I believe Pat will be able to set us straight if he sees this string. These snaprings come in sets, even though in the parts CD they each have a different part number according to thickness. You need to measure and order the thickest one that will go in. I have all the PN's if you need when the time comes.

Awesome thanks man, yeah I will be talking to you I'm sure when it gets tore down. I got the tranny back out last night. Tomorrow night I have to make something to support the motor so I can get it off the stands and out of the garage. I have to get my moms ss back in the garage. I'm going to start tearing it down hopefully friday night and I'll be back with my laundry list of questions. Thanks guys

A guy at work is selling me a chevy 350 with tranny that has 24,000 miles on it for 200 bucks. If this rebuild fails then its swap time!

I made this today so I could get the jeep out of my parents garage. I was able to bolt my contraption onto the block and it rests on the frame rails. I think I went a little overboard because its not that much weight but I'll have it for the next time we need to move a jeep and theres nothing to support the motor. Sorry for the terrible cell phone pic, but my phone is on its way out.

There is never a substitute for overengineering.

I FINALLY got a couple hours to work on the tranny. I got this far in a couple hours, but now comes the hard part I was looking ahead in the directions and there seems to be a pilot bearing between the input shaft and the output shaft. I'm thinking maybe this could be the problem. This is totally a guess at this point but you can move the shaft up and down pretty good and thats where its moving. There seems to be way too much play in there. The syncros don't look bad and there was only the smallest bit of brass shavings in the bottom (probably from trying to grind it into the garage). I thought for sure there was going to be a broken gear but I haven't seen anything yet. Tomorrow I will tear into it more.

Don't set your heart on it being that pilot bearing. The shafts are supported in the case at both ends by bearings. With the case off, they lose that support and feel sloppy. Looks like you're off to a good start. Tell-tale pile of ziplok bags......label and photo everything. Get some kinda marker and mark on your shift rods, etc. It can take some anxious time figuring out which is which etc at re-assembly time.
