ax 5 upgrade

New guy here & new to jeep tinkering .

I have a bad transmission (ax5)in my otherwise great jeep .

Question ...I here talk of upgrading to ax15.Will the bell housing off the ax5 interchange with the ax15 ?
Assuming I would have to change the transfer case & drive shaft also ?

Already have a good ax15 setting in my shop so would it be cheaper & better to use it than replacing the ax5 ?

You running a 4 cylinder or 6? Also the ax5's are a 21 spline output shaft where as the ax15 is a 23 so just be aware of that for your transfer case options. A cj dana 300 was more commonly a 23 spline.

Lol is your gas tank filler on the left rear quarter? Behind the liscense plate? Or under your right trail light?

Even easier.. what year is it?

Bellhousings are not the same on the transmission end. Output shafts on the AX5/AX15 are different spline count so you need to get a 23 spline 231 or change your 21 spline 231 over to a 23 by replacing the input gear.

Google this. There's tons of detailed info out there. Folks aren't likely to recite all the ins and outs again in your thread, especially since a CJ never came with an AX5 so you are in the wrong forum.

Your 92 Wrangler would be referred to as a YJ (87-95)
