Just like NBfarmboy described above, it sounds like you stripped the splines on the shaft, and/or countershaft 5th gear. YOu have the trans apart, what happens when you manually move the 5th gear synchro sleeve between 5th/reverse? Does it lock onto 5th spline gear, or does that assembly spin freely? Does your shift fork slide on the shift rail, or is it properly "fixed." Likely you stripped the splines off the gear/shaft.You say it looks intact. It isn't. Pull off that snap ring on the counter shaft, and use a puller to remove 5th spline gear and 5th counter gear/shift hub and tell me what you find, but try sliding the synchro sleeve over the counter 5th first and see if it doesn't free spin (if it is "normal" it shouldn't spin....)But confirm for me that what you have is an AX 15, and not an AX 5.

Just saw your photos, we were posting simultaneously. You have an AX 15, which would be expected behind your 4.0 you listed in your profile. Check your PM later, not sure I can send a PM via work/firewall.

The second repair I did on my 81 trans was to take the 5th gear to a machine shop and had them cut me a keyway down the inside of the gear with a wire EDM, then I hand cut a matching keyslot in the shaft with a die grinder/cut off wheel, made a key, put it back together and ran it for years. This was back in 1983.
Ahh edm machines
That brings me back to my days in machine shop there haha
I'm looking for an ax15 or one of the new 6 speeds for it

Stalking your thread from the comforts of my tractor .... seriously!!!!

Need some help with this,,,

i went to a jeep shop in my area, looking for the clip,, the guy knew just what i was talking about. when i got there he had two?? so one is smaller than the other. where does this go? could someone also help out with a photo of just where the clip or clips go??? that's the only part of this whole thing, i'm a little worried about.

I seem to recall photos of just what you're asking earlier in the thread, I just can't see them to direct you due to work firewall limitations.

The large clip actually holds 5th gear on the mainshaft, the smaller clip is probably the clip for the 5th gear counter gear located on the countershaft directly below the mainshaft.

collar fitment on AX15 shaft

Anyone ever find out for sure if that collar will fit on a AX15 shaft as well?

No, the clamp will not fit an AX-15 5TH gear.

But I can see no reason to fit one to an AX-15 though, it has never been an issue with them.

I think the newer clips are better quality, so you'll likely never have to worry about it again. but the collar is an extra level of security.

If you only took off the rear case, and it shifted fine into all the other gears, that certainly does not make much sense unless you didn't seat the end of the shifter into the shift forks properly--but that would be hard to do. Do you have Neutral?
Before you put the rear case back on, and installed, were you able to move the 5th shifter hub back and forth by hand to engage/disengage 5th gear? It may be best for you at this point to start a new thread and discuss your problem so we don't clutter up a "How to" thread. I'll look for your new post, or PM me with a link.

While this is not likely to be your current issue, it isn't a great idea to re-use an old snap ring here, as they are so prone to breakage. These snaprings also come in a variety of thicknesses that you should match to the ring gap once the gear is back on the shaft. This list I compiled for the AX 15 as that is where I happen to spend my time, but you should get the idea. I haven't had a need to do it for the AX 5 yet.

There are a lotta numbers associated with all the AX 15 snap rings, hopefully they transmit without too much confusion. They are marked A, B etc on the ring itself with an acid mark.

Snap ring for front bearing (Input shaft)
A- 2.10-2.15 mm 0.0827-0.0846 inches PN 8350-6099
B- 2.15-2.20 0.0846-0.0866 8350-6214

5TH Gear snap ring (13 of them, there is no “I” in this sequence. In another source, there is an I listed, and the sequence goes only to “L” Caution is indicated here as I do not have a way of reconciling this variance. The astute Jeeper will notice there is a predictable progression in the thickness measurements, as well as the PN’s here. Hopefully this will not derail a project, but in the end, you may need to purchase 2 sequential parts to get the one you need.

i pulled my ax5 apart today, i bought it without 5th gear, ( it would click ) i was hopping it was just the clip, and no damage, turns out the clip was fine, but 5th gear wasn't, i just ordered a gear set that comes with the 2 gears, im going to order a clip, is there anything else i need? this is my first time getting into a transmission, im actually doing a frame up on the jeep so i can take it wheeling in 3 month at rausch creek, bought it for 300 bucks with a bad frame

i think i need to find a new skidplate/ crossmember too
