Im in the process of doing the same thing on my YJ. Got the collar from consolidated transmission, very fast shipping. Turns out the genius that owned the jeep before me welded the 5th gear snap ring to the output shaft, needless to say it didn't work and made a mess of things. Also ordered a rebuild kit of Ebay cause second gear has been grinding and thought I might as well fix it while I was in there. Luckily I have a reliable bicycle to get me back and forth while I fix it

ok I know this is an old post, but we are having trouble with the 5th gear in our ax-5 trans. I read this whole post and I see it gives where you can get the parts etc.... however I am having a very hard time finding them. Consolidated Transmissions I can't find and they don't answer the phones. Can anyone give me an actual website or phone number that works for finding the parts. I have searched and come up with nothing. thanks all
hey guys, i just had my synchros done, about 2 weeks ago, and first when i drive for a long time, putting the jeep on first gear makes a big loud noise, like the gear going in with high pressure i donno.. any suggestions? and now, my fifth gear just kicks off when trying to engage it, i have tu try many times for it to stay on? did i loose the fifth gear clip?? i have warranty so i just need to know what is it and they will fix it, as long as is tranny related.
please let me know guys what u think..
5th gear went out for me a few days ago, i was on a downhill on the I-10 in 5th going about 65 and i started hearing a grinding noise which turned into a really loud rapid clacking noise.
i sure as hell hopethis is the problem, otherwise im'a be pissed. lol.
I just had a similar problem. I was driving down the freeway in 5th and suddenly there is this loud metal banging sound. I turned off the AC..nothing. I grabbed the shifter and its vibrating really badly. I downshifted to 4th...noise stops. Every other gear works but 5th sound like gears are not engaging. This write up sounds like my solution.
Thanks for the info Max.
But it seems like it would be easier to simply remove the transmission by unbolting the bellhousing. Am I wrong?
If not, why is it necessary to remove the shifter, transfer case shifter, and the shifter tower from the gearbox?
