I have a 95 jeep wrangler yj 4.0L with the ax-15 transmisson I've recently replaced the transmission with a rebulit one and it works great other than a few issues. When I put it in first gear at complete stop (btw its hard to get it into first gear and second while standing still with the clutch in, like you almost have to force it, it works better if you go from 3-2 then to 1st) and go to take off it pops right out of gear, however, if i hold a little pressure on the shifter and slowly let off of the clutch, it will "click/pop" and from that point it will not pop out. It shifts smoothly through all other gears. It also gives me an issues when trying to go into reverse, feels like maybe the clutch is dragging or something. I would like any help to try and figure the issues or there by chance is a flaw with 1st gear.

I have close to the same issue. My AX15, while cold will go into 1st or 2nd when the tranny is cold. Once it warms up it become a real PITA to get the shifter into those 2 gears when fully stopped. At a slow roll it is easier. I have since replaced & bled the clutch master cylinder and the tranny fluid. Still having the same issue. I again bled the system.......still a PITA to get into 1st & 2nd.
Next step is the syncros?

I just left a shop where the guy has been a Jeep mechanic for 26 years. He took the Jeep for a drive. When he got back he said he is leaning towards the pressure plate. He has seen a lot of the cheapy, aftermarket clutch kits with weak pressure plates and this problem. He pointed me towards an AC Delco clutch kit or Centerforce.
As for the popping out of gear. There is detent ball that must fit into the detent on the shaft when you place it in gear. Something is worn, sticking or misaligned.

With popping out I would say the synco assy not the synco rings. most rebuilds just replace the rings.

Update on the. Gearbox was replaced and new one is working like a charm.

Its the holding teeth/shift collar on whatever gear you are having issues with. They get rounded and don't hold the gear anymore and pop out. Just rebuilt mine and that was my problem. Most people believe it to be the sychros. While they can't help the cause. They won't be solely responsible for it either the holding teeth will be.
EDIT: Sorry to hear you got a new tranny. Rebuilding it is a very big benefit, and honestly not hard to do.
