AX-15 Identification (Specifics)

Picked up an AX-15 for my 4.0 swap a month or so ago.

It must be from a Cherokee (transfer case holes are clocked to the 'left')

The stamped code on bottom is 81100170, is that 1988 or 1998?

The output shaft protrudes beyond the case by 1/2"-3/4 or so - the np231 input gear I bought is too short to reach the oil seal on the ax-15, so just trying to ID the transmission to get it all sorted out for when I'm ready to swap.

Mostly curious on the proper transfer case input gear, and transmission year.
thanks!

Good timing...Thinking about the same 2.5L to 4.0L swap, and I just picked up a 4.0L engine this weekend. I'm looking for an AX15, and this thread will be mighty helpful!

Here is a cross reference by tag number to identify what year it is.
The tag is located on the passengers side front top by the shift tower. It's usually a silver sticker with green printing on it.

It's too worn to read. All I have is the stamped code/serial on the bottom. Someone mentioned in another thread that it also indicated year/month of production.
