AW4 trans swap into a YJ has anyone here done it?

Ok I just picked up a 1994 Sahara for cheap($475.00) problem is someone stole the doors and soft top and the AX-15 Trans is in pieces in the back of the Jeep. I've been wheeling my 92 Renegade at Rausch Creek for the last year or so and it does very well but at times clutch, brake, gas pedaling gets old so i'm thinking the new to me Jeep will get a auto trans. So the million dollar question is a AW4 out of a Cherokee a good swap into a YJ I have read a few write ups and know it can be done just wondering if anyone here has done the swap and what there thoughts were. I'm still not 100% sure on the build up on this Jeep but thinking 35"s(maybe 37"s) 8.8 small lift and a lot of cutting to make everthing fit. I still want to be able to drive this Jeep on the road so it's not going to be a trail only Rig.

Talked to Blaine about the AW4 he swapped into his wife's TJ. He was VERY happy on how it performed.

I know this doesn't answer your question but perhaps it adds a little motivation.

Send him a PM and see what he says.

It does well in a yj. There are a few write ups on how to use some switches to make it even better for off roading by controlling the shift pattern. 1-2 is in one postion of the shift pattern from the shifter linkage. Locking up the TC lock. Here is the bad in the stock setup is the 1-2 shift is controlled by the the TCU. So if you want to hold 1st gear then you would need to manually control that with a modification by using the switches.

Also you will need to do some clocking on the mounting point for the TC to trans. new drive shafts or resize yours. I would recommend that you would look into getting a sye do to the aw4 is a little longer than what you have. This is to give you the drive shaft length needed. Now you could get by without the extra length. But when I did mine I thought that I could use the extra length.
here are some links for the swap.

here is some writeups on the shifter
A 89 yj with a 4.0 aw4 sye out of an 92xj. Now the hard part is done time to get it up in the air just a bit. Working on 8.8 with 3.73 and lsd for the rear. and new D30 hp with 3.73 .
For those who have not figured this out I'm old school but can handle the new too.
