automatic YJ hard shifts

Hi guys,
I have an 87 YJ with a 3 speed auto.
When shifting from 1 to 2 it shifts pretty hard...jerks u forward.

This is my first Jeep with automatic transmission and am wondering if these transmissions are known for hard shifting?

If not...anybody got an idea what to look for?

Torque Converter is new, as well as oil and seals/gaskets

Thanks
Nick

Mine shifts very smoothly. I'd check the fluid first. Then make sure the kickdown linkage is properly adjusted. If you had a shop rebuild the trans I'd take it back.

kickdown linkage usually affects a downshift from 3rd to 2nd in order to accel faster. Check the bands? maybe they just need to be adjusted.

Kickdown cable will adjust the shift point and can adjust shift firmness slightly. To set it just press in the button and shorten the cable til the little stopper on the cord is just touching (or a about a milimeter away)the throttle body.

What bands would you be referring too?

Why do you have 3.07 gears on stock tires? I thought gearing for stock tires should be at 3.55 which is what comes in the automatic 6's. Maybe the gearing is messing with the shift points?

1 is visible outside and the other when you drop the pan. Should be torqued to 72in/lbs I believe.

Not your trans below, but same concept.

are you sure about the 3:07's?
I thought 3 speed auto's with inline 6 came with 3:07 gearing?

That's what it says in the YJ FAQ, but I can't confirm that since I did not check what is stamped on my ring. But if 3.55 is stock, and you have 3.07, then my money is on gearing for the hard shifts, because mine runs smooth as butter.

try adjusting the bands first, the picture above is a good picture of the band adjustment inside the transmission, the other band adjustment is on the drivers side of the tranny, above the kickdown linkage, it looks like a stud with a nut on it, loosen the nut, and tighten the rod down(dont really try to crank it down), and then tighten the nut to the recommended torque specs im not really sure what they are, while making sure the rod doesnt move much. If after these adjustments, with new fluid, and check the filter and replace if neseccary, if it still shifts hard, you might need a rebuild.
