Anyone run 3.5" black diamond springs with full military wrap

Just like the title says, I'm looking for a YJ owner that's running a set of Black Diamond 3.5" heavy duty springs with full military wrap.

Will be installing the kit this weekend and would like to get some information.

I am, have been for 8 or nine years now. I had to install 1 inch lift boomerang shackles in the rear to keep the spring from bottoming out on the frame. With the stock rear shackles, the spring would strike the frame-bumper when flexing. The front is not a problem, still using stock shackles.

You can't compare the old Warn owned black daimond to the post 2007 superlift black daimond quality isn't there anymore.

Hmmm, that is a shame. I like my springs, I assume they are Pre-Superlift, I definitely bought them before 2007, but am not sure if Black Diamond was still a Warn brand at the time of purchase. Did anyone else own the brand between Warn and Superlift ? I think Louie on this forum is also running Black Diamond 3.5 springs, I wonder if his is the new or old. It sounds like the OP already has his kit, so hopefully they are still decent springs.

Good to know, thank you for chiming in. I recently got sponsored by superlift and they sent out black diamond kit instead. I can't find any information or even pictures of the kit that I have. It looks of very very high quality and extremely heavy duty.

The plan is to install it this weekend, take some videos and pics of it in action for Superlift. Then either keep or sell the kit. I'm on 33s with tube fenders. You mentioned having a need for 1" shackles in the rear. That would put me at 4.5" of lift, too much for 33s. I did order a set of 36r OME springs that I may end up using if black diamond doesn't work out.

Trying to avoid installing twice. If the kit is really good, rides well, flexes good, doesn't sag then I'll end up keeping it. If not, I'll sell it and install OME at that time.

What is also confusing, black diamond by superlift now has partial military wrap, could this mean I got the old good stuff? If I posted a pic, could you guys tell?

I did the same with some recent springs this year and I'm using 5/8" Currie boomerangs on the rear to get rid of the interference. I have the HD springs and have a little bit of a rake, but the hard top will take care of that in the winter. They are definitely better that the factory springs and 1.25" shackle lift they replaced. They are firm enough that I'm not running the sway bar either and there's no noticeable body roll. I recommend them highly.

You mentioned "some recent" springs. As in a whole different brand? Or you're talking black diamond?

I currently run 1.5" heavy duty partial Superlift springs. They're good spring overall with zero sag even when loaded. I also don't notice any body roll when sways are off. Only con really, they do ride too harsh for the metal in my back. I'm sore for days after a decent few hr trail run.

Here are some pics of the black diamond ones I got from Superlift.








Did some searching and looks like to me, those part numbers belong to regular Superlift 3.5" springs. Look nothing like the ones I got. Another thing that makes no sense. I looked at a picture of black diamond springs, they display only partial military wrap. Once again not like the ones I got.

Anyone have exact same springs in pics above?


(fbv193, could you pls post a pic of your setup if it's not too much hassle?)

I put my 3.5" black diamond lift on in 2009. I run the currie boomerang shackles also. I ended up getting 5" out of the lift because my stock springs were sagged. It rides stiff. The shocks that come with it are cheap. Getting some bilsteins from Kolak soon. I also took of the sway bar and track bars.

Do your springs have full mil wrap like the ones I posted above?
Any sag over the years? Also is the front spring 5 pack, rear 4 pack?

Will be running with bilstein 5100s

Yep, BDS 3.5's. I bought and installed them earlier this year.

OK, mine are not full wrap, they are full wrap on one end but not the other. The other end the second leaf starts to wrap but not completely. My records show that I bought them in May 2006, so I guess I have had them on my Jeep for 7 years, not 8. I like the springs, seem to be holding their own, even though I use the Jeep for some heavy trailering, hauling building materials and firewood in a military trailer. I think they ride pretty nice, but had Rough Countrys before, so maybe I don't know what a soft riding YJ is like. I have a 1 inch Daystar body lift and even with the 1 inch boomerang shackles, I don't think it looks too tall with 33s. Here are a couple pics.

Thanks for taking time to post videos. Suspension definitely looks like can take some beating. Even with your trailer, rear end doesn't sag.

No problem, the videos were already on Youtube. Yeah, it does seem like the springs are pretty tough, with the trailer loaded the rear settles a couple inches, but they return to where they started at least so far. I have used it pretty hard the past three years, hauling firewood over some pretty rough stuff, stumps and such.

I am not sure the reason for having a full wrap on one end of the spring and partial wrap on the other, I figured maybe clearance issues at the shackle ? I installed them so the full wrap end was at the solid spring mount and the partial wrap was at the shackle.

That looks like the same kit I bought 7 years (2006) ago as well. Full wrap on one end, partial wrap on the other.
