Sounds like a short or possibly a bad bulb causing a short. Bulbs are easy and cheap to check/fix. That might be a good place to start.

Check the bulbs in the tail lights. They are dual filament bulbs so if one filament is off contacting the other, it gets interesting what can happen.

What about the turn signals? are there problems with them also? I would check for:

Bad bulbs or wrong bulbs.

Then I would check the ground that is right on the right front (passengers side) radiator support. The rear lights are case grounded.

There are two flashers in the fuze panel under the dash one is for the turn signals and the other is for the hazard flashers. They can get 'stuck' also. I have pulled mine out removed the cover and 'adjusted' the contacts to make them work but replacing them is easy also.
