any ideas?.... loud knocking sound!

Hi guys.... have realy enjoyed reading this forum & have learned alot, this is my first post. I recently bought & fell in love with an 89yj... 4 cyl. Ax 5 . I've done a ton of work on it over the last few months & now have a knocking noise which I believe is the tranny or clutch. It knocks (or ticks )while driving and idling. At a stop If I release the clutch pedal enough to engage it slightly the knocking stops.... ??? Performance isn't affected tho, it runs & shifts well .

Sounds like the throwout bearing inside the bellhousing.

its actually not really part of the transmission although you do need to remove the transmission to fix it.

Depending in the mileage on the clutch, if you are going to change the throwout bearing, just do the clutch at the same time. The throwout bearing is what moves when you push in the clutch pedal. It slides along the trans input shaft and applies pressure to the clutch pressure plate teeth, which disengages the clutch from the flywheel. Typically if 1 of those componenets goes bad; the others aren't far behind.
