I finally got around to lowering the jack mount. I moved it to the front side of the carrier frame and dropped it about eight inches. This makes for better security too as you can't remove the jack without swinging open the carrier. So as long as the carrier is locked in place you can't remove the jack. The visibility through the rear view mirror is much better now.

I decided to modify my carry basket so it sits on top of the carrier instead of hanging off the back of it. This moves the weight much farther forward and should reduce the load on the hinge. I put rubber bumpers on the basket with about 1/4" clearance between the back glass in case it bumps up against the glass. I also put another rubber bumper on the outside edge of the basket where it hits the Jeep top when it's swung all the way open. I modified the carrier latch to get it out of the way of the license plate holder/gas cap cover. I may build a gas can carrier at some point but I think this will be it for a while.
