Another ammo can console writeup

This is one of those random projects. I had an ammo can laying around and decided to make a console out of it.

I really dislike my old console so i took it out. I've been running for a little while with none at all. As much as i like having no console(i really do), I need one for on the trail. I keep some pretty important trail items inside of it, that way its always within reach. With that in mind, this console is built for function rather than looks. Keep that in mind thought the buildup.

I started out with a MK44 mini gun ammo can.

This type of can isn't hinged. The entire lid comes off. I've seen where other people have put hinges on their consoles but it usually looks really ghetto or it just too much work to get it to look nice in my opinion. What I did is just make my can hinge on its own. First I had to cut off the lip on the back portion that stops the lid from hinging up. If you have a can handy you will know what im talking about. After i cut the lip off i just welded the rear handle to the can so it can no longer come off. Just by doing this the can will be able to hinge up no problem.

Heres where i threw a little crappy weld on the back handle

And now it perfectly opens up to 90 degrees

I also wanted some cupholders so I can enjoy a nice cold Dr. Pepper or something on the trail.

I started out with some PVC. Again this is for function not looks. I could care less if it looks ghetto, as long as it holds my drink

Then I measured and cut out some plate for a mounting bracket

It'll sit just like this, the PVC bolted up to the plate

Then the plate welded to the bottom side of the can

after that I threw it in the jeep to see how it fits. It fits great and the height of the can is the PERFECT height to rest your arm on.

Then I installed a locking hasp latch to it.

Finally I painted the cupholders black.

I'll try to get it installed in the jeep tomorrow.

Project was simple and should serve its purpose well.

-Chris

I like the ingenuity of the cupholders. Great writeup. Let us know how it works for you in the coming months.

Someone you know is in need of 2 of those mini gun cans.

Looks good Chris! Need to paint it, and add some padding to the top. Once the sun starts beating on it, its gonna get rather warm.... How do you plan to mount it to the tub? Backets or self tappers through the bottom?

Ill see what i can do about getting some more.

I thought about adding some padding to it. Ill probably wait til i get burned really bad then do it. Sometimes you gotta learn things the hard way haha.

as for mounting it, In the front i will probably use some self tapper to the tub. for the rear i have a bracket from my last console. I'll use some bolts to the bracket, and the bracket is then bolted to the floor.

Well, after learning the hard way too many times; I can admit I was wrong.

You, Sir, were right about my 8.8 swap. I should have gone with the 4.10s and not the 3.73s.... My trans guy says that is what finished off my 700R4. Not enough gear turning the 38s. At 70 mph the engine was sitting at around 1400 rpm, which put alot of stress on the 3rdgear clutches. Not enough fluid pressure due to the low rpm and the torque of turning the large diameter tires. Built up heat, heated the clutches and caused premature failure. Stepping up to the 4.10s would have helped reduce the stress and prolonged the failure. So, my "frugalness" is costing me 3 times as much now.

FYI if you go with ABS WDV/pipe caps, they are solid black, no paint needed and even a little cheaper in my area.

Got the new console installed today.

It's mounted in the aft with 2 bolts, and in the front with a big self tapping screw threw the tub.

bolted to the bracket that came with my old console

You don't need to worry about making a pad for it. In the summer, just throw a towel over it. You do always travel with a towel, don't you?
