I bought the black and decker one, a few years ago, and it broke within 4 months. After fixing, then breaking again, I gave it to my dad, and went back to my old one, that I was thinking of selling to get a better know tool. I bought it at a garage sale, spent 2.50, and have used to cut up multiple vehicles.

That looks like it's worth about $10. Those switch grinders are an emergency room visit waiting to happen. Sorry, but I like the thing to stop if I happen to drop it or catch an edge with it.

I got an $80 Dewalt grinder for $25 at Home Depot last summer when the store was changing out all thier models. This one was a floor model with a few scratches on the bottom where it hooked into the display. The lady even threw in a few free grinder disks for me!

go buy yourself a Dewalt grinder. the one I use regularly is a few years old and gets about 6 hours of use a week, sometimes more. The thing takes a beating and comes back asking for more. Spend the extra money, get a REAL grinder and you will notr be disapointed.

Spent around $30 on a craftsman about 5 years ago and its still tickin. And I do beat the snot out of it. On the same note, I have killed a few cheapo's at the worst time in the past. Not on my projects but it still sucked at the time.

I hold Craftsman in a higher regard than most of the crap brands sold at HF. But, I still prefer Dewalt power tools over Craftsman.

Different stores in different parts of the country rotate product lines at different times. Most stores around here (metro nyc area) rotate in July or August. I have a friend that is an area rep for Home Depot so he tips me off as to when each store is rotating their floor models.

I go in there and clean up every year

I'm pretty sure that if you ask nicely most stores will tell you when floor models are availible. Basically you're paying them for their "trash" which they don't mind at all.

The switch ones are fine, just don't drop them and if you do use common sense and don't try to grab it while it's jumping around. I bought a DeWalt one with the weird switch and I hated it. It also only lasted a few months, just beyond the warranty period and I guess a gear broke because it would run but not spin. I've never had a problem with DeWalts quality before though so it was probably just a fluke that it broke.

I got a used Bosch one to replace it for a few bucks at a swap meet and it's still kicking a couple years later. A couple days ago I was at Home Depot and they had a deal for two Bosch grinders with two grinding discs, and two masonry discs for $79 so a friend and I split it.

How do you guys live with just 1 grinder? I've got them ranging from the $10 specials with a sander or flap wheel on them all the way up to the "widow maker" with it's 7" grinding wheel that eats concrete and rebar.
they're each set up to do a different job, and they do fine at that. sander, cut off wheel, grinding wheel, wire brush, and then the big grinding wheel

I use two ryoby, they were cheap at home dept, $13.00 it think. I have cutoff wheel on one and grinder on the other so i don't have to keep switching wheels in the middle of a project. they have held up pretty well so far.

5" deWalt "Quickchange" here. http://www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/s...k=P_PartNumber

Always loved deWalt...still do. Runs strong.

I would have to suggest not purchasing a 5" grinder of any less than 7 amps for all-purpose use.

If you don't want to get a high dollar one, wal-mart has the black and decker models that work well. Mine has been around for a year now with no signs of stopping. It was $29.99

x2 for the B&D. got mine about 3 or 4 years ago and it's still going strong. that said i picked up a cummings from their truck sale that comes around and it's going on 2 years old. definitely helps to have two grinders around.
