I want to thank you guys in the know for all of the good information provided in this forum. I have a 94YJ 2.5L. I have KC lights, winch, stereo, etc. I research for the best way to up grade the original alternator in my jeep, this is what I came up with, with you guys help of course.
First I bought a Diehard P2 $240, which fits perfectly on the YJ battery Tray. I bough a 25' roll of welding wire #2 ($50), cable lugs. I re-wire all of my negative and positive cables, example: battery (-) to motor and battery (-) to fire wall. Battery (+) to starter, battery (+) to PDC.
Alt I bought at Autozone for a Jeep Grand Cherokee 136amp $130. Direct fit. Disconnected the 6 gage ground wire going to the engine and replace it with #2 welding wire. The positive side I ran to a 150 amp ANL fuse and fuse holder then to battery positive.
On a side note, you may wonder about the cut out fenders, I am waiting for a set of tube fenders from C & C Fabrication.
Did a test run. Hooked up to my dump truck from the bottom of my drive way, all lights on, stereo on, on idle I winched myself to the top (I would not do this on a real winching situation). No sweat.
It took me a little while to get the concept, to make sure I was somewhat competent for undertaking this upgrade. I read and I read and re-read. Everything I found on "alt upgrade," but un-functionally was either for the 6cyl or it was never complete explanation of the process, for example: What was the correct way to go from alt to battery. For me this was the one thing that took me the longest to get. Now, I am no expert but it became clear to me that this wire needed to be bigger than stock and had to have its own fuse.
Originally I tried to install the 160 amp (Dodge Dakota PN 56029914AA) But had a plug in for the stator wire and other wire. I did not wanted to rig this connection. So I went with the 136 amp (life-time warrantie) from a 98 Grand Cherokee 318 5.2L. Perfect fit. I did't have to do anything with the plastic shield, it was facing the right way. The reason I went with the Autozone Alt is that, there was an alt at the Junk Yard. They wanted $75 bucks. But I reasoned, why get cheat and adventurous at this point. I have sank so much money and labor into my Jeep that another $130 won"t make a difference, and also the peace of mind.
That sears Diehard P2 LOOKS BEAUTIFUL!! I just got the P4 and so far I love it. I also am going to get a new alternator. I have already upgraded the wires. I was gonna go to a 120 AMP I think. Again, congratulations it looks nice in the pics GOOD JOB!!!
Mudsling..I wanted to get the P2 but sears said it would be a while before they got more in,so I just got the P4. Probably a sales trick. I run lights so I just hooked them up to the other posts. It worked out.If you have a girlfriend that has a 1987 YJ and she INTO jeeps....You need to turn said girlfreind nto a wife!!!! LOL!!!
Again.....GREAT JOB on upgrade!!
Dillonjm, those tube fenders look great. I spoke to Chris (c & c fab), he took the time to answer my questions, real pleasant guy. I also order a rear bumper from Dirtyworx, I will be building the tire carrier myself. I will post pics when I am done.
