I have a 1988 with I-6 258. Stock alternator finally crapped out. Since I have additional lighting and heated seats (well worth it!) I figured now is the time to upgrade the alternator!
Any suggestions of replacement upgrades that will not require major modifications?

Get a 97-98 GC alternator for the 8 cylinder motor. It puts out 136 amps and bolts right up.

And then there are those fancy alternators that Quadratec and Four Wheel Parts and others sell...real expensive, not sure what advantage they would have over the alternators that the other guys are recommending...of course, you are assured that they will fit and work, and who knows what the price of the other alternators are, BUT I suspect that the ones being recommended above aren't anywhere near $300!!!!

Every time alternators come up it is worth pointing out the difference in older vs newer jeeps is internally vs. externally regulated. The newer models have the regulator controlled by the computer so there are two different paths to upgrade. Not sure of the years though, but 1990 and older will take a cs144, as mentioned above.
Search for some threads with my name and others along with alternators going back 2-3 months and you will find a ton of info on the various options.

were ALL yj's regulated internally? or were some regulated by the ecu?
doesnt really matter for me but i'm sure it will help someone reading this thread so they can better understand what they need.

There was a cut off for internal v external regulators, but I can't find the link right now. Don't take this as authoritative but as I recall the internally regulated alts have only 2 wires plus the output. One is the field power and the other goes to the amp meter.
best info I can find is 1991 and newer are regulated by the ecm. Simplest way is to identify what is in there now. I hate to leave this hanging but the important thing is that not all yj's have the same style of alternator and to verify yours.
