Airbags

got a strange question.... anyone ever put a newer model steering column with air bags into an older model wrangler? Got asked the other day about putting a airbag column into an 88 wrangler because of a new young driver. just looking for idea or thoughts

You would need more than the column, you would need the computer, wiring and ALL of the impact sensors throughout the rig.

From my EMS training, I would hesitate to do this honestly. you need to know how to install the entire thing. It can go off on you with the slightest electrical discharge into the system. And adding this to a rig that was never designed to have them could be catastrohic. You never know what may cause it to go off. And if it went off at the wrong time while driving.....

See where I am getting.

In the end, you would spend more money than the rig is worth prolly. The YJ wrangler does just as well as the TJ in all crash tests just so you know.

even if remotely possible i would say do not touch that bag of snakes as it can bite you in the behind. lets say it was a direct drop in, just the fact you said it was so, or even worse if you helped put it in. you are opening yourself up to a lawsuit in the even the operator got hurt ... tell the person to buy a newer jeep for their kid if they need it.

on a more technical side not ... it would require the transplant of the crash sensors, airbag computer, and steering wheel ... never done it, usually eliminate the damn things. wearing seat belts properly makes them useless for things other than burning your arms with the powder they are covered in, and breaking passengers noses when your arm goes flying into it.
