Air Cleaner Info
Can someone post some pictures of the stock air cleaner for a 1990 6 cylinder?

Mine has a Weber 2bl carb on it with some aftermarket crome cleaner and I want to go back to stock. I think I should go back to stock? Not sure if getting cold fresh air into the carb is better than the hot air from the engine compartment? It has been years (a lot of years) since I messed around with a carb on anything other than one of my tractors.

I have been looking for the parts to go back to stock but I am not sure what I am missing and how to get it connected to the carb.

I would post a pict but I don't think I can yet?

Here is the part you need to connect the stock air cleaner to a Weber.

Thanks Laff; I searched and didn't get anything from it.

Where is the best source for a stock cleaner? I have looked on the web but everything ends up just being a filter replacement.

Does the flexible hose go to an external port in the grill?

Sorry about all fo the noob questions.

Good luck finding a stock air cleaner assembly. Try Collins Brothers in TX. They usually have a large supply of used Jeep parts. Other than them, I would say eBay, craigslist or a junkyard is your best bet for an assembly.

Yes, the flex hose does run to the grill.

In my opinion, your not going to help the engine by putting the stock air cleaner on it unless you pull out the vacuum doors in the "snout" of the assembly. These restrict the flow of air. I just wouldn't go thru the hassle of doing it, the performance gain just isn't there. I've always run the air cleaner that came with my Weber carbs without any issues.

I was looking at going back to the factory one to eliminate the hoses that come from my exhaust system and are just kind of floating around the engine compartment. Once again I can't post a pict and I don't know what they are for? I believe they are reburners for the cat?

These were just disconnected from the air cleaner and are flopping around on the right side of the engine. There seems to be a huge amount of heat coming from them?

Thanks again for all of the info; this is all new to me again. Going from my Cummins to this little thing is a huge change for me.

Those are the Pulse Air tubes. Yes, they are connected to the cat and if they are just open to the engine bay they are putting a lot of heat near the carb.

Keep the air cleaner you have and get a hi-flow cat without an air tube. That will get rid of those tubes.

Here is a great website for understanding the mess of vacuum lines under your hood. I assume the previous owner put the Weber on. Sound like he didn't do a very good job cleaning up the emission system.

Crud! It was running a lot hotter than I thought it should so I took it in for inspection and had the mechanic put on a new turbo muffler and tailpipe. Wish I would have known about the cat replacement prior to doing this.

Is disconnecting the pipes an option? Shorten them and connect them to each other? Smash and braze the ends of them?

No they didn't do a very good job of it. There were vac lines everywhere and half of them were open. I think it is running well now just need to do something with these hoses.

You can cut them at the cat, crush them flat and fold them over to seal it. More than likely that cat is plugged up, so you would benefit from the hi-flow cat.

If you have open vacuum lines, I'm surprised it runs. All you need are the lines running between the carb, CTO, EGR, evap canister and the distributor. Everything else can go. When I pulled all mine, I filled a 5 gallon bucket with hoses, solenoids and check valves. What a mess they designed.

Got the new cat on; cleaned up the hoses and crud hanging around.

I did find a nipple off of the downpipe a few inches from the manifold that one of the polution pipes was attached to.

How is the best way to seal this up? I was thinking of heating, crimping and brazing the end shut? Just crimp and bend and let nature take it course? I could also make a cap from the old line and clamp it on?

What do most of you do to seal this off?
