Air cleaner

89 4.2 with carter bbl, is there a air cleaner that looks like this one that could still plug in to most of the main vacuums lines? Or do I really need those vaccine lines hooked

There are no CARB approved aftermarket air filter housings for the factory 4.2L YJ. If you had Howell TBI you could use that type of filter, but for the factory 4.2L you need the stock air cleaner and everything hooked up to it as it was from the factory to be able to pass smog in California. Without the factory air cleaner you'll fail visual and you'll fail the sniffer. The factory air cleaner has a temperature sensor that the computer needs a signal from in order to put the computer into closed loop mode. Without the proper signal, the computer will remain in open loop mode and run too rich. Even if you modified an aftermarket housing to accept all the vacuum lines, it would still fail visual.

Since you have the 4.2L and you are in CA, you'll want to check out Adventures Under the Hood for all the info you'll need to keep it running well enough to pass smog. The best advice I can give for anyone in CA who has a 4.2L YJ that is registered for the street is to consider going Howell TBI or swap in a 4.0L engine from a 1991-95 YJ. The factory Carter BBD setup in the 4.2L YJ requires a lot of patience to maintain and some parts for the emissions components are no longer made.

You reside in California if you stray from the stock air cleaner someone will get cancer and they will pass another law or close a trail

Denver area has testing, even if you only work in the affected area and live outside.

Is keeping a clean, properly running engine so difficult? California's air has stayed the same despite the population quadrupling. It's because of clean air standards.

That air cleaner is a piece of crap. I call it the "hot air intake"
It will be sitting only several inches above you hot exhaust manifold and will also be sucking in hot air freshly washed through your hot radiator. If that's the kind of performance you're looking for, go for it.

Cooler air is more dense than hot air. That means more air for combustion. That's a good thing.

Be aware that the high elevation in Colorado will result in up to 20-25% instant loss in power. Thinner air.
Not a reason not to move there, just keep in mind your Jeep will be pretty doggy there compared to sea level.
