I've got a 3" body lift, I wonder if I can do this without removing the gas cap bezel, or whatever it's called. There's plenty of room in there thanks to a previous owner.

I was able to get to mine by removing the plastic cover under the corner where the fill tube runs. I couldn't get a screwdriver in there to remove the hose clamps, but used a small 8mm wrench I believe. I have a stock suspension and had plenty of room.

one of the first mods i done to my yj , as for the extra weight of the extra 5 gal of fuel just fill up the day before you go wheeling and by the time you getto your wheelin spot you have used most of that fuel so there should be no clearance problem

I did this MOD with ease without dropping the tank. Just pulled the plastic guard out of the way, took off the hose clamps and pulled the tube out with needle nose visegrips!

Is this mod possible w/ 2.5l yj's (91+)? Pretty sure mine is a 12 gal tank and thought I read somewhere this mod doesn't work on the 2.5L (hopefully I didn't read that in this thread, lol)

NO, it will work with the 2.5, I did it to mine 91+ were all poly tanks. It just depended on what neck insert they put in.

I did it on my '91 2.5L and it worked. (19.something gallons)
I can now drive much further and have had no clearance issues due to extra weight even with flat stock springs.

Ok, after reading this thread I'm still confused on whether or not it will work on my 89. Are all poly tanks the 20 gal size? I have the ploy tank but I can only fit 15+ gallons in it.

Thanks Rock,
After reading through 7 pages, everyone seems to be ignoring us early YJ's. IF we can do it, what do we need to look for before taking everything loose only to find out it won't work. |

If you have the POLY tank, meaning plastic, not metal. Most of the pre-91 did not have the POLY tank's, they had the metal one's. The metal tanks were actually two different sized tanks, then when Chrysler started to phase out some of AMC stuff they went to cheaper to produce Plastic tank, and they all got one sized tank.

I've done this mod on my 95 YJ (profile has all mods, nothing new since I increased tank capacity) without dropping my tank. I followed the instructions in the previous thread. The only thing I would add to the commentary here is, be careful when pulling the tube out of the tank. I ended up with a nasty cut on my wrist when my pliers slipped off the tube and my arm crashed into the edge of the tub (where the plastic gas cap housing was removed). I could easily have used 8-10 stitches. If I did it over again, I would have hung a towel around the exposed edges of the sheet metal at the tub.
I've been very happy with mod, though. |
