?about making front bumper for YJ

OK I have been doing a search and no good pictures or explanation of how you attach a front bumper that will be a winch mount to the front of a YJ.

The factory bumper bolts to the top of the frame.

I want to use some 2x6 tubing and make one but not sure how to mount it.

Any one have some good pictures of the mounting brackets?

Do you notch the tubing and slide it over the frame rails and bolt it down using factor mount?

Is that strong enough to hold a winch/recovery point?

Mine is 2x4 and welded to the front of the frame rails. I made a winch mount from a peice of 1.5x.120 tube and some 1/4" plate I had lying around. The mount is flush with the bottom of the frame and the fairlead is in the bumper.

Like Chris, I used 2"x4" rectangular tubing for the fit I wanted since the frame is 4" tall & for simplicity. I made some tabs & drilled holes in them then welded the tabs to the top & bottom of the bumper. My winch plate is a Warn.

For the ends, you can see that I notched the ends so that I could bend a flap over & weld things together for a nice fit. This is not the easy way to do things, but the fitment was excellent & made for easy welding with my MIG.

Thanx that what i needed to see. I just got back from the steel supplier so I guess I am going to have at it shortly.

I had a feeling that was the way t o mount it. I also was thinking of using some plate across the front. Still working tings out. Ill take pictures along the way.

Oh ya what the measurement. I t looks like a 1" cap but how much is the angle? I was thinking of making it like 3" in from the end.

How wide did you make it too. I have seen some that go in front of the tire but not sure if that is good or not.

OK I have 1/2" plate for the frame support. Anyone think this is way over kill to much weight on the front end?

I am not going to mount a winch there but its the only scrap i have of the right size.

I could just weld tabs on the bumper and mount it that way and put the plastic Jeep thing back on.
Thoughts?

I am right in the middle of the same project.

I have no short term plans for a winch but I am going to replace the plastic "jeep" cover with a steel plate, probably 1/4", to act as my top mounting tabs plus a winch plate in the future.

FWIW, I am also going to make sure all my seam welds are filled in good so I can use the bumper to hold air. Should be about 2 gallons.

pix if I ever get time to actually do it.

The link above from timatoe is a good start and sort of what I am following.

Ya I am using the link above for min too. I am making mine for a removable winch so I am not sure I need the extra weight of the 1/2 plate on the front bumper.

I dont have 1/4 plate around just 1/2 Know its over kill but very heavy.

Anything worth doing, is worth overdoing. It's only an extra 10-20 pounds and I promise it won't bend.

more updates

OK I made some good progress today. I would have had it very close to complete but my plasma broke, ran out of tips and I could not cut the holes for mounting in the 1/2 plate then i need to weld it up.
Some of the welds are not pretty but they will hold.

So here is some pictures. More on the link in the first page.

Mounted on the truck just the lower 2 mounts for now.

Tabs for lower mounts:

Receiver mount

To mount the reciever I got the placement on one side then drilled hole in 1 corner and then all the was to the other side. Then I traced the receiver and it lined up perfectly.
