Mine is 2x4 and welded to the front of the frame rails. I made a winch mount from a peice of 1.5x.120 tube and some 1/4" plate I had lying around. The mount is flush with the bottom of the frame and the fairlead is in the bumper.
Like Chris, I used 2"x4" rectangular tubing for the fit I wanted since the frame is 4" tall & for simplicity. I made some tabs & drilled holes in them then welded the tabs to the top & bottom of the bumper. My winch plate is a Warn.
For the ends, you can see that I notched the ends so that I could bend a flap over & weld things together for a nice fit. This is not the easy way to do things, but the fitment was excellent & made for easy welding with my MIG.
regret it some days.... but not when i'm yanking on it!

OK I made some good progress today. I would have had it very close to complete but my plasma broke, ran out of tips and I could not cut the holes for mounting in the 1/2 plate then i need to weld it up.
Some of the welds are not pretty but they will hold.
So here is some pictures. More on the link in the first page.
Mounted on the truck just the lower 2 mounts for now.
Tabs for lower mounts:
To mount the reciever I got the placement on one side then drilled hole in 1 corner and then all the was to the other side. Then I traced the receiver and it lined up perfectly.
