I'm mounting a tool box in the back and I cant get to the fastener location. Will the skid plate come off without the tank dropping or does it all come down at one time? I also have a leak somewhere topside that need to be repaired.
I think you will have to drop the tank if you drop the skid plate. Go to www.jeep.com and check to see if there is a recall for you jeep about the fuel tank gasket. Something about leaking and fire I wasn't real concerned about it on mine. 200K miles and no gas smell so I think it's okay.
The leak is my own fault when mouting the tool box I drilled trough it:brickwall . I was being very careful not to do that. when drilling I couldn't find the hole from underneath so I thought there was second piece for sheet metal, but no... it was the tank. Iwas able to get a screw and rubber washer in it but itis still leaking . So thats what I'll be doing tomarrow.
it all comes down together. Before you drop the skid, take out the plastic fender gaurd thingy that closes the corner below the license plate, this will provide access to the fuel filler neck.
I had to make my own... They don't sell it anywhere. Advance/autozone has a big sheet of gasket material that they sell, this is all I used and I have zero leaks or fume issues.
Got my gasket at the dealership. I had to order it.
