Abandoned YJ

there is an abandoned yj at my company's secured parking lot. I'm going to try and get a hold of the owner and see if they'd be interested in me taking ownership of it. I've never owned a wranger, yj or any generation for that matter. I will try and get some pictures of it if i can. Its covered with a tarp, atleast two flat tires but i suspect all are dry rotted. Dash and gauges seem in good shape. Don't know about any rust. Manual transmission. Don't know what engine it has or gearing. Looks to be totally stock. back seat looks to be folded up and discarded in the back. Has anyone ever tried to get an abandoned vehicle like this?

Contact your DMV and find out what needs to be done from a legal standpoint, if it is truly abandoned and not just stored.

There are online services that will give you info/specs on the Jeep if you have the VIN, but it won't give you owner information, for privacy reasons. If you start a lien procedure through the DMV, you may be able to get owner info.

Carfax, but it'll cost you some money to do that, it's not lots. Check for rust, frame especially. Crawl under with a screwdriver and jab any parts that look rusty. If she goes through, then it's gonna be a pita to fix if possible. Body rust isn't a concern as its easy to fix with a 200 dollar welder. Yj's should have to come with a welder at purchase. Find out how long it has been there for exactly and determine what amount you want to give if any at all. If it runs and has been there for anything more than 5 years, I'd offer 500-800 bucks. The owner isn't doing anything with it and would probably be glad to get that much for it. Or the owner could be sentimentally attached and may never sell it. But give it a go.

Yeah, in Alberta, if its been sitting for a year and not stored, you can buy it from registries, it is classified as abandoned.

Check the stickies on this forum, there are links to find out the specs by going to the Chrysler Jeep site if you have the VIN. There are numbers included in the VIN that will tell you where it was manufactured and all the stock info. When I first got my YJ, I paid for a Carfax and it didn't tell me anything, it was a waste of money IMO. If the Jeep is truly abandoned, your best bet is to start with the DMV.

The carfax will only tell you if it is a write off or if it has had any major work done on it by a shop, dealer or body shop. Most of these places report to carfax. I used it and Iam glad nothing popped up. Although I did get curious and I used one of my last carfax on it after I had my ebrake recall fixed and it showed it was done. It all depends on what your main concerns are.

It could be a great deal or the most expensive cheap vehicle you ever bought.

418 miles on 19 gallons of gas. Can't beat the BBD !

I don't think you have any legal ability do do anything about it, except contact the owner and see if they want to get rid of it. The company would have to put a lien on it, and they'd have to deal with it.
