Does anyone know how to replace a turn signal switch? What's involved?

First you need a steering wheel puller, this lets you remove the steering wheel.

Then there is usually a metal lock plate (not sure if the YJ's have this or not as I have yet to remove my steering wheel) that needs to be removed. Some of them are just screwed on, others are pressed on and need a special tool to remove that as well.

The turn singal cancel switch should now be exposed and will be held in place by two or three screws.

Sometimes you have to remove the whole assembly (this includes the wiring harness for the steering wheel) as one piece to fix the problem, other times (depending on the style of the cancel cam) you can just replace parts of the cancel cam unit (ie GM vehicles).

Unfortunatetly this is kind of a generic over view of removing/replacing those parts. As I have yet to do it on my YJ I couldn't tell you exactly how to fix your problem. Hopefully someone with more knowledge can tell us something.

Do you need a flasher or the actual switch in the steering column? Flasher is on the fuseblock, extreme right side next to the pedals. Big round thing (the one on the right), I want to say ~$10?

Make it Mopar or Surplus City Jeep will have what you need.

There are a couple more but I can't think of them right now. Also, if you are going to be working on your own heep, get a FSM for your year YJ. It'll save you a TON of time and money in the long run. Good luck

my turn signal lever busted off the other day after what - 16 odd years... I think that it was about $9 from NapaOnline - the entire switch/spring/return unit is roughly $65 to $85 depending on the design of the one you're trying to remove.

I have yet to rent the steering wheel puller from my local Schucks

Although this link is really to fix the sloppy tilt column, it has detailed instructions on taking the steering column apart to get to that very switch.

To answer the question earlier stated... yes, the YJ has a lock plate. You will need at least a steering wheel puller. You also need the lock plate removal tool. (More specialty tools to add to that drawer of tools you'll only use twice in your life).
