94 YJ wont shift into 4wd

Hey guys, Its my first post. I have a 94 YJ and love it. I got it for 1800 bucks and its the most fun thing Ive owned.

I drag race a 9 sec mustang for 10 years and did all the work myself but Im new to 4wd and ready to learn.

I searched on the forums for days, and would appreciate any help.

I understand the vac lines and motor.

My question is when I try to shift into 4 hi or lo. I physically cant pull the shifter back. I crawled under and had gf pull shifter but all I see underneath is the linkage flexing.

I cant imagine a bad vac motor not allowing me to pull it into 4wd?

Is that possible?

I could see it not engaging but actually being unable to pull it back. Yes, I checked the linkage and its not rusted or locked.

Any help would be appreciated.

The shifter does shift to the side. Seems ridiculous and obvious but thats where I would start. Hopefully you have. Spray the linkage with WD 40 just in case.

Thanks Yeah, I did try that. From what I understand there is a detent in the linkage. I will check it but its 102 out with 40 percent humidity. Updates to follow

Sometimes my Jeep and Ford will not shift unless I let it roll a little bit. If your linkage looks good maybe try to move the Jeep a bit while trying to engage 4x4.

Just something easy to try before you start taking things apart. I only say this because you said that you weren't familiar with 4x4.

Good luck.

Ok I got it into 4WH but it was a *****. That detent was in the way and i had GF pull on shifter with both hands and while pulling back she pulled to side to get past detent.

Ugh! Obviously there is something wrong.

Ill update as we go along with hopefully a couple pics if I can figure out how to post them.

Unbolt the inner and outer shifter boot and remove so you know that they are not an issue.

If you want to......
