Heyyy..i guess I should finish this thread

well...i still drive her 100km everyday.....no leaks, frame still intact...it's been nearly 4 years since I got her.....248000km...i need to replace my exhuast manifold...it's cracked pretty bad ....other than that, I don't really like the rough paint anymore...
But dont let the rust stop u, hey if I can get 5 years out of her...WOW...it's worth it !!!
I stripped the durabak off the tailgate to see how hard it was on there, came off easy with paint stripper....so I may do the whole Jeep... ...with some special unique touches
Anyway....THX to everyone...

If anyone would like to follow this Jeep, I may post a thread about repainting her....I will post it here
Cheers

Mine don't look quite as bad as yours when you started & was thinking of a new tub, once these start rusting it spreads quick, and the insides rust before you see damage have a 93 4.0 still runs strong, body mounts look like yours afraid it will fall off soon good job

James,
nice work on the YJ, and the tailgate conversion. Got a Cj, and after the rebuild I mounted my tailgate hinges upside down, and the gate did not lay flat with the floor boards after opening. Once I flipped the hinges, it was level. From the pics, yours are mounted upside down.

Hi Boxman,,
I was kind of wondering when you would get tired of the rolled on paint job and it only took two and a half years. It must seem longer to you when you stated five years. You finished your paint in November or December of 2007. To be honest I think it is a shame that you did all that work to prep your rig back then, and then rolled the paint. You could of purchased a cheap spray gun for $30 to $40 dollars At the same time you were doing your work I was pretty much doing the same, except for the frame rust which I do not have that problem. I was repairing a few body rust holes and my floor. I had my rig stripped down to the tub like yourself. I painted it with a high quality urathane paint and it still looks good, minus a few minor surface clear coat paint scratches.

Urathane paint is more expensive, and more durable. It sure beats using enamal paint and having the paint start to look poor in a few years. Florida sun is hard on paint. I am no paint professional, I just asked questions at the auto paint store and did what they told me. Now that you are going to repaint your Yj keep in mind all the work and time that you are taking again in your paint prep. I know that you like to do things as right as possible so use a good paint. Good luck, I am pretty sure that you are not looking forward to paint prepping your YJ again.

One more thing (tip) when you are repainting buy a paint nipper. ( about $12.00.) If or in my case when you get a run it is easy to clean up the run and throw another coat on.

I didn't do a thread back then. I was very new to the Forum and did not understand the concept. To be honest I do not think or did not think to take pictures. Now I wish I had taken pictures so that I could see the before and after. The work that you and I did back then was very time consuming. I was lucky to be able to work outside in nice weather and roll my Yj back into the garage when finished for the day.

I had the whole dash and interior out, Plus all door pulls, bumpers, nerf bars etc. My Yj was just a shell with every body piece off.

To be honest I was following you for tips.

No, you had some good tips, and a great thread.. But I have to admit that when you rolled your paint I almost cried. I truthfully could not understand.

By the way I stated that I took all body parts off. I did not remove the side doors or the hood. I did not want to go through alignment problems with fresh paint and they were aligned on my rig perfect.

Everything else was off and things like the bumpers, headlight trim, ect. were painted seperatly. I took a couple of ladders and place 2x4s across the steps and hung them with wire. What I did was paint them a few feet away and then go back to hang them to dry.
