Have you taken the fuel tank down yet? I would be curious to see the condition of the frame on the inside near and around the shackles.

I had a bad gas smell when I bought the jeep...so not being one to deal with explosives, i brought it to the stealership...they dropped the tank, flushed it, and replaced fuelpump/sending unit and reinstalled the tank...gas smell gone.

I will get a great look at it once I remove the tub, I'll have pix then.

Actually here's one pic of the frame...looks like just surface crud to me...I'll grind it and POR 15 it.

How bad could it be?..it's only 12 years old.
Anyway, I plan on getting a MIG welder..so I can reinforce any real probs.

THX for looking...

Have you poked around on the frame with a screw driver yet? That rust looks like it could be slightly more than surface.

why not look for a yj from the south that has no rust and start with it as a base. for example, saw a 91-95 yj, black, 4.0, 5 speed, stock with 110k miles for $3800 yestereday. no rust. only dent is front fender which could be easily repaired.

seems like you would save quite a bit of money starting with a fresh body and frame and have a more solid final product since it has no cancer history....

That can be a fun experience. I just recently got done replacing my rear crossmember in front of the tank because it cracked all the way through. Once you start hitting your frame with a wire brush and jabbing with a screwdriver - things get interesting. In order to weld in a patch - you gotta find good metal somewhere first
