Wow, just stumbled across your thread. You have a large project going. I thought my YJ was a hand full, but I'm not fighting any rust. I bought a 89 with the engine and trans pulled out. I put in a TF727 and NP208. I parted a Wagoneer for my trans and decided to keep the axles also. Every time I work on a part of the project something else is messed up. I'm only about 1/2 way along with my build up. I'm kicking myself for selling my little welder now.

Impressive undertaking BoxMan. Got my first Jeep six months ago and am stumbling my through what-soon-may be a light restoration. Already added new front hub assemblies, radiator, brakes and A/C. Currently struggling with sputtering MotorCraft carb.
And it's my daily ride! Sorry, didn't mean to ramble. Back to BoxMan's Baby Blue. Really look forward to watching your project evolve, BoxMan. I'm going to try and mirror you when you cover one of my needed corrections. And, keep posting those pics. They're inspiring to a Jeep greenhorn like me. Rock on!

had exactly the same problem on mine, and basically did what you did, frame off rebuild....
a few points though, drill a 1/2 inch hole on the underside of each frame rail at the rear, at the lowest point, providing a drain. i welded 1/8" plate all the way around, top, sides and bottom, then drilled out for the bushings witha hoes saw, the welded in the bushings. luckily the inside diameter is a stock size tubing... you will have to use some big grade 5 washers to space out the shackles where they meet the springs, be sure and use the shackles that are bolted together so you can do this, the welded ones wont work. after doing all that, aswell as welding a support on for the steering box, it broke, due to it being very badly rusted o nthe inside of the frame......duh! i am now doing what i should have done the first time, got a rust free frame and starting all over again.... hope you have better luck than i did!

had to be cut back to the shock mount to get a solid piece to weld to... there are more rust spots on the rear too, coming thru the por 15......... its basically scrap, all rusted from the inside. i would definately check the inside of the frame rails before reassembly, can't tell you an easy way to do it, but do it anyways. wouldnt want to see someone do the same screw up as me ![]()
