93yj sticks in 2nd, has no 5th

Just got a 93 YJ to cruise around the island and learned that it will not go into 5th gear (not really an issue in Hawaii) and it periodically sticks in 2nd gear. I had to wrestle it loose from second while in traffic about 4 times. I paid a few bucks for a new clutch and it still sticks and actually grinds a little between all gears, unless shifting slowly. Anyone have any suggestions on my next course of action? Thanks!

it takes about 5 minutes to shift a gear in a jeep trans. they're not sports car transmissions, shift it like a truck.

i would suspect you have a bent shift fork or rail though.

'97 zj 5.2, some stuff, some other suff, and some things that even work sometimes.

The clutch feels fine. I've actually had problems getting it into first since getting the new clutch - not a smooth transition and sometimes when I think it is in first, I'm still stuck at the light and have to try it again. I've seen a few AX-5s on Craigslist and have access to tools and a lift. Removal and reinstall is not really in my kit bag.

Rebuild it for sure! Lots of good how to threads on here. Or you can just replace it. But from the symptoms you describe it isn't going to get better.

I had almost the exact same issue when I had a yj except it was third that was sticking. A rebuild was the solution.
